Full Version: Polishing/Buffing Celluloid

I have a celluloid pen that is showing some scuffs/abrasions that run the circumference of the barrel - it looks like it may have been caused by screwing/unscrewing the cap. ???

 wallbash.gif

The question is, how to polish/buff those scratches away? Is it worth it?

Thanks in advance!

you may wonder why this topic is not garnering a lot of attention as yet.

I will try to maintain my civility in responding (but don't worry, any ire would not be aimed at you at all.)

there are several long threads here re: polishing of pens, what materials to use and should it even be done. IMO, if it's your pen and it's bothering you, then go right ahead. Do check the cap though. I'll point you to a thread on a similar issue I had with one of my pens. As it turned out (no pun intended) the cap ring had come loose slightly and was twisting just enough to scar my pen. So you may have a burr on the cap ring (assuming there is a cap ring) or some other problem with the cap lip that is creating the problem. So once you polish, the scratches may just reappear in a short time.

If you think you are perhaps torqueing the cap slightly when capping/uncapping, and that this is causing the scratches, consider the one-handed capping/uncapping method. We actually have a little better neurological feedback using one hand to uncap a pen than using both.

here's the thread I mentioned.

i was going to pull up threads re: polishing but frankly, there are too many. do a search on "polish" in the Repair Q&A forum and you'll see why it would have taken me a while to include all threads on the topic.

Been thinking along similar lines myself KC, although it was a thought to perhaps pin a topic regarding polishing plastics/celluloid - as well as others on nib polishing / grinding. There's some great information here in the Repair forum, all it takes is a little searching. But for the more popular topics, perhaps asking everyone to search to find the info is requiring a lot of wasted effot.

I'll discuss it with my co-moderator, and we'll see what we can come u with.
