I recently bought some Crane note cards and envelopes... nice cards with a fountain pen at the top...
I have to say that I am not impressed with the lack of FP friendlyness of this card stock
I returning a snail today and used the card stock for the second page of the snail. I was using my Sheaffer 875 with a nice fine nib and Red Black ink... it was definately feathering a lot more than I expected. I also used my Waterman Zenith with a find stub and La Colour Royale and it feathered even more...
Neither of these pens and ink show any feathering on Rhodia or Clairfontaine papers.
The cards are nice... but I guess I will just have to think about my writing size a bit when I use them because of the feathering.

I have found with Crane that if there's something printed on it the paper is thinner and more prone to feather. Check out blank sheet sets in Monarch and above for a better grade of paper.

I've only used their (Crane's) plain letter sheets and folded notes. I haven't had any feathering. My pens are almost all Sheaffers, except for one waterman. If you bought any other papers from them, I hope they work 100% better for you than the cards did.... unsure.gif

If you still have some of that Old Skrip Permanent Royal Blue, you might want to try that, I have found it resistant to feathering on newsprint. I have also had some success with Pelikan Brilliant Black as being feather resistant on newsprint.

rolleyes.gif I have only used Crane's stationery stock but I have had no trouble with feathering with it. As I stated elsewhere in a reply to Betty's post I have found Crane to be toothy. My Charleston fine and Aurora Ipsilon Deluxe fine with Noodlers black did not like the paper very well tending to drag. My modern Dandy and 58 extra fines and a vintage Croxley fine all write very well using Noodlers black and my new favorite,Noodlers Aircorp blue-black. I haven't tried any other pens on it yet as I have really gotten into my British pens lately.

That card stock is not representative of Crane's standard stationery.
Cute fp on top though smile.gif

If you like Noodler's AC Blue-Black, try Noodler's/Swisher's Tahitian Pearl. It's a step more permanent than AC Blue Black (It's Eternal) and a great rendering of the Blue-Black family.

I've been looking at these cards for awhile. I'm glad I resisted buying them.

I've not encountered any feathering using Noodler's Old Manhattan on Crane's Note Cards.

I bought Crane's Executive pearl white color and one with Fleur-de-lys design and they are so unfriendly to my pens that I am considering trading back the unopened box. I even tried with a binderized Visconti very wet M nib and it's like writing on sand paper. angry.gif Obviously they are made for BP.

If you like the design of a note card but find that it is not fp friendly cut a slightly smaller sheet of fp friendly paper, write on it and insert it in the note card. A tiny dab of glue will help secure one of the corners.

In France, notecards with paper insert are customary. I think it was originally intended to extend the writing surface because I saw paper insert in fp friendly card.
It is also inserted in cards made of all kind of artsy paper; textured, metallic, etc...

I almost exclusively use Crane's paper and stationery. My stationery portfolio consists of the following Crane products: calling cards/social business cards (smaller than business cards), informals (foldover note cards) , correspondence cards, and Monarch sheets. I keep other stationery around- but I always have my personal collection of Crane imprinted and engraved papers. I like that they are 100% cotton. And I have not had any problems with ink feathering.

If anyone wants to experiment with Crane paper- I'd be happy to send a few sheets or cards for you to try.

Hi, Anne-Sophie,

I'm trying to visualize this. The loose (or lightly glued to a corner) paper is just tucked into a folded card? Is that what you're talking about? At first I thought you meant just a loose paper the size of the card, then realized you probably meant a fold-over card, not the single ones I'm used to using.

Love the idea of the artsy paper. I have boxes of such papers. Thanks for the idea. biggrin.gif

Several years ago, I remember picking up a booklet in a Crane's retail store that advertised the different stationery and cards they sold - sizes, prices and the like - each printed on an exact example of the paper being described. It was designed to give to the consumer so that you could indeed feel the thickness of the stock and actually write on the various samples to test for fountain pen friendliness. Perhaps these still exist, though I haven't seen one again.

I have had Crane note cards for several years now, and use them for special occasions. Last year, at the holidays, I used them as greeting cards for the first time, and also used a fountain pen on them for the first time. No issues, though I am not enough of a FP user to qualify my experience as representative. In fact, they were extraordinarily well received - more so than our usual (Children's Art Project) cards.

Of course, when you buy the things, you seem to wind up with a lifetime supply!

I have been using Crane's Crest 100% cotton paper, 90gsm. No feathering or show-through, but it feels a little toothy.

Oh man, I just ordered some crane letter paper and envelopes today! I browsed about twelve different sites looking for plain antique paper, and cross' plain stock was the closest I could find.
