Hi everyone,

I have just started to collect, one of my pens is a Black Pelikan 200, bold nib, and I am very pleased with it.

I would like to go for more Pelikans, I think they are beautiful pens and if they all perform like mine I would like to increase my collection.

I have seen the 140, really like it, any advice?. Any suggestions for other modestly priced models. Also, I would like to try an oblique nib, probably fine to medium, and yes, I really like vintage models.

Thank you for any tips.

Hi Dan,

It's hard to go wrong with a Pelikan, especially a vintage one. They're great pens and normally have wonderful nibs. The 140 is a good solid pen and I think that you will enjoy it. When you buy one I would make sure that the piston seal is in good shape.

Dan,

I have a 140. It is an excellent pen. The nib is fantastic and the longitudinal feed is very cool. I got mine from Rick Propas, thus the pen has been restored and the piston is in excellent condition. I highly recommend Rick. In terms of nibs, you should email him to find out what is available.

Thanks folks, I will contact Rick Propas for more info. I heard that 140's tend to have semi-flexible nibs, is that a good or bad thing? What is a flexible nib?

Flexible nibs will vary the width of line that they lay down dependent upon the pressure that you write with. More pressure equates to a wider line. I find them enjoyable, but it is ceetainly a personal preference. Some folks don't like them at all. Others love them.
If you do get one, don't press too hard as you can spring the nib. This is when you apply so much pressure that the nib is bent and will no longer return to it's original, and proper working, shape.

Thanks Chris
