Hard medium? Opposed to a soft medium? I am sure that is what pilot calles it.

If it's clear that it's only "H - M", then it's a Sailor Medium nib, Denis.
Sometimes, the engraving could be covered by the lip of the section so that you can't really see clearly, such that it could actually be "H - MF", which would then make it a Sailor Medium-Fine nib.

Sounds very logical, hopper!!
When I was shopping for a Pilot 742 and a 823, I was looking at all of the different types of nibs and it was quite mind boggling!! So I ended up with the Custom 823 with the Broad nib. I guess you cannot go wrong with that!!!
Here is a link to some of Pilots different nibs.

can't answer your question, but i did find a thread on another forum with some nib codes for sailor.
http://kamakurapens.invisionzone.com/index.php?showtopic=538 never seen an explanation of those codes before anywhere else

Savage, you're probably right on the H = Hard.
I just don't know if Sailor makes any S (= Soft) nibs though. I will check and report back here if I find out anything.
