Your ink reviews are always thorough and nicely done, Penguin! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Midnight Blue. I love the color, but wish it was faster to dry.

Thanks, I really appreciate it! Yes I wish it took less time to dry as well.

Could anyone tell me how this color compares to Art Brown's Manhattan Blue or FPN's Starry Night? I have all three and they look pretty much the same.

(I also use these inks in pens with fine nibs - even the wider "fine" of the Lamy 2000 - and they all seem to be more black than blue. Has anyone else had the same results?)

Thanks, Chris

I only have Manhattan Blue, but other reviewers have said they're quite close, a little difference in a tad more black, or blue. Perhaps you can do a scan for us? It's okay to conclude at the end of your review that if you have one you don't need the others.

In my little ink sample book that I have been slowly building Noodler's Midnight blue seems slightly lighter and more blue, whereas Starry Night seems a little darker and more towards a very cool black undertone. Out of my wetter writing pens both get very dark, with Starry Night looking more like a cool black and Midnight Blue a very dark navy.

Please excuse the messiness of my samples. They were only made for my personal reference and not intended to be presentable. They were done on a Rhodia note pad and the ink names to the left are written with vintage Skrip Blue-Black.

It would be interesting to see a comparative scan that includes the FPN color. A couple years ago, there was an excellent and comprehensive comparative review here of Manhattan Blue, PR Midnight Blues, and I seem to recall another blue? Midnight Blue?, concluding the same thing, although there were some slight differences among them.

I think that this is the review of which you write:

It is interesting.

Thanks to all for the interesting and useful replies to my question!

I seem to favor the Midnight Blue; it's going into my new FC Mondoro soon.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
