Tryphon LIU

I received this pen from Giovanni today with some pen repair supplies I ordered...

I was pleasantly surprised at the gift and even more so when I filled the pen with a 50/50 mixture of Noodlers Antietam and RedBlack...

This is one of the nicest writing pens right out of the box I have ever had the pleasure to use... The nib is a butter smooth wet writing medium/fine. With this ink more on the medium side of fine... all in all a very nice nib.

The pen itself is on the heavy side (lacquer over brass body), but not so heavy as to be uncomfortable. It also fits my hand beautifully. Size wise it is about 0.50" longer than my Pelikan 200 and a smigeon (yes that is a technical term, :P ) thinner, but the section is just about the same size.

This particular model is the Gunmetal with Chrome Trim, a beautiful combination...

It also comes in Matt Black with gold plated trim, transparent glossy blue with gold plated trim, bright transparent cherry red with gold plated trim, and satin silver with chrome trim.

If you are looking for a inexpensive pen to knock around with or a gift to someone who is just starting out with fountain pens, I don't think you can find a better value at $20.00. I have to honestly say this pen writes as smoothly as some of my more expensive pens...

I have no attachment with Tryphon, just a very happy customer who was made even more happy today...

Tom,

Thanks for taking the time from writing to show off your new pen. It good to have a review on this very nice looking new introduction. Good job on the photo, too! :)

Best, Ann

Looks interesting! I've got some heavy heavy pens that are great writers but they're just too big and --heavy--for me. Your comparisons to the M200 lead me to think this one may be a better "fit". Thanks and enjoy!

Hi Tom.

Thanks for the review. I got the same pen when I ordered a book from Giovanni. Mine is as you describe, an excellent writer, with performance and construction quality not often seen in an inexpensive pen. Mine has become a regular on my desk at home, filled with MB blue-black ink. I like the MB BB ink, but it doesn't perform very well in most of the pens I have tried it in. Works like a charm in the Tryphon.

Why Tom, Why? Evertime I read one of your reviews I get the feeling that this is a pen I can't be without :o

You should really consider a second career in marketing or sales.

congratulations on another fine looking and writing pen, and it was a very nice review.

I'll just go and beat my head against the wall until the urge to email Giovanni passes :bonk:

french: i read this review and this guy, and the noble savage, make me want to buy a pen every time i read one. i have just one fountain pen, a charleston with xf nib. id like a wider nib for fun writing. still not sure what to get. and the inks, i have waterman florida blue, which is good, but the browns seem like fun and maybe a purple. i dont wanna spend a lot on like different inks, but if there is a place i can get a medium nibbed pen to try out with some ink in brown, or even a mixture like this, to see if i can get hooked, if someone can email me, id appreciate it. i have about $20 in my paypal account id like to use up and i know id have to maybe spend more, but if i dont try and ask, i wont find the solution.

the charleston is a great size for me, but you never know if you'll like bigger or thinner until you try.

Tom,

thanks for a great review! You sure know how to present pens and I loved your pictures!

I would like to see also a review of the extraordinary pens that I have seen on your website: they look magnificent and I admire your skill and artistry!

As far as the Liu' is concerned, it is a very good writer as you kindly pointed out and at $20 must be one of the best deals around. I am surprised that it does not get mentioned more often when people ask about good, inexpensive fountain pens.

For those who are curious, the picture shows all the available colors.

Thanks again!

Giovanni

The blue and red look nice, and $20 seems like a nice price. are there more models of pens? ive not heard of this pen before, but id keep an open mind. anyplace to get a pen like this and maybe a mixture of ink like tom posted on (it has a nice depth to it rather than a plain brown)

Sam,

As for where to get this pen, just go to Tryphon - LIU and you can order there...

As for the ink, it is a 50/50 mix of Noodler RedBlack and Noodler Antietam... It is a great brown with fantastic shading and a touch of copper in it.... I will definately be mixing more of it....

As I said, for $20 this pen can is definately a fantastic deal....

Tom, great review of a nice intro pen. The ink mix and writing are superb.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
