The Dark Side of Good Nibgrinding

Recommended Posts

My latest batch of reground pens from Richard Binder arrived to my home in Boston. I am still not back from Europe, so I asked my husband to test a pen about which I was especially curious: a German sterling silver Waldmann flat-top in a barley design that was reground to a .4mm cursive italic. I should have known that I was asking for trouble. With my husband's permission, I post excerpts from the letter I've received from him:

So far so good. A nice cursive italic, particularly visible with my husband's handwriting on this 5x5 Rhodia grid paper.

Yes, very nice indeed. Can't wait to use this pen....

And then, I saw this:

The text reads: "Yeah, I think I am going to take the Waldmann from you. What can I say? I'll let you borrow it any time you want, but that's it. Mine!"

Beware of the dangers of good nibgrinding!

Tell him you are not worried. He will have to fall asleep sometime. When he wakes up, he will be staring at the bottom of a drip-can . . . :ninja:

Oh, my husband is quite clever. He will protect the Waldmann; it is his now...

Besides, I admit that I can't really deny it to him if he likes it so much : )

Its great to have a spouse that enjoys your hobby and passion.

As I mentioned many times I wish my wife would show interest in my hobby but alas it is not ment to be.

Have you tried "bundling" the pen with something she really, really likes?

For example, if she likes jewelry, you can lure her with a mother of pearl pen, a pen with a pearl on the clip (like the MB Greta Garbo), a silver overlay pen, or one of the Krone pens with rubies, amethysts, etc., that are quite reasonably priced at FPH?

Alternatively, you can try with a pen that reflects a hobby of hers as a theme, or a pen that is in her favourite colour. Something that will interest her and make the pen irresistable even though in theory she does not like them...

This is the pen by the way -- Though for some reason, all the online sellers make it look futuristic and streamlined in the images. In reality, this pen has a very classic flat-top shape and feel to it. I will photograph it properly when I get back to the US and post some images. It is a well-made, attractive and unusual sterling silver pen that has a lot to offer.

Fahrney's is selling the same model Waldmann in a lacquered honey comb pattern, but that is the only place I have seen it sold in the US.

No need to wait, (since it's my pen), I can upload a few (poorly done) cell phone snaps (that really show off the tarnished silver) right now:

P.S.

The actual pen appears darker in most light than it does here under flash. It has a proper silver tactile feel and aroma.

That's all for now.

Good thing I don't have a husband! I'm planning to get a cursive italic nib for my Pelikans.

If you think that's wrong, you should see The Vader Project. It is a touring art show that travels to, and is added to at, Star Wars conventions internationally. Beautiful artwork, but some of it is so out of place that it is shocking.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
