/sigh/ speaking of washed out, my scanner didn't like this one so much, and some of the lighter bits didn't turn up, but the general colour is true (on my monitor, of course).

Thanks for the review.

I've never seen a gray ink before.

It's something I could see using on a beautiful rainy day in Paris.

P.S. I like watercolory inks in my ink wardrobe along with more saturated inks.

I find them more expressive than saturated inks, and are more often identified as

coming from a fp.

I too had a very hard time getting an accurate scan of my Sheaffer Gray ink when I did my review. It must have something to do with this color, scans just come out like these inks are really washed out.... <_<

I wonder how it actually compares to Diamine Grey. From how it looks on my screen, I'd say pretty similar, but then of course how something looks on a screen can be very deceptive.

Diamine Grey (left) is much darker than Herbin Gris Nuage. Both are "cool" greys.

Thanks for the review!

I'm a fan of grey inks though I prefer to Dark Greys. I usually have to mix PR Grey Flannel with black to get it to my liking.

Also I really like your handwriting, it's so neat! :D

That comparison tool on your site is very cool, Martin. Thanks!

Hmm, I used to think, "  Why not just use a pencil?" when I saw gray ink advertised or discussed. Now I can see some uses for gray ink, mostly in personal correspondence and journaling / diary writing, but not by me yet :) .

Here's a belated comment... I just put a cartridge of this ink into a pen last night. I've had the cartridges for 4 or 5 months and never used one, as I thought who would want to use a gray ink? It took forever to dry on Clairefontaine paper, so I don't recommend it for such papers. However, it works pretty well on cheap copy paper. One line that I wrote looks like silver and I was suprised by how nice it looked. While a gray ink would never be a staple use for me, I can see why some folks might like to use it.

This is wonderful! Looks almost silver grey. Kind of romantic- perhaps if the elves from the Lord Of The Rings would have written with Herbin ink, they might have chosen this color.

Thanks for the review!

Thanks very much for the review! Have been wondering about this color.

May you have pens you enjoy, with plenty of paper and ink. :)

Please use only my FPN name "Gran" in your posts. Thanks very much!

I've been using the gris nuage recently, and I've grown to like it very much. It is a bit the same color as pencil, by the way. That's not a bad comparison. Curiously, it makes strong blues and blacks seem almost shockingly dark. I like the fact that it's not easy to read for others near by, but it's easy enough for me to read. It is, as someone above said, an ink that's clearly from a fountain pen.

I love grey inks! I have about 15 or so different kinds... I think I like Omas the best... People are right when they say it looks like pencil but it somehow feels elegant to me...

This is one of my favorite grey inks!

It is a little bit on the light side but it really looks like a true grey ink and not a faded black.

Besides that it misses any brown tones but shows nice cool blue tones.

I really rivals an older formulation of Omas Grey (which has been changed over the last years).

Might as well use a pencil, might as well use a pencil.. Try putting it in a broader nib and saying that! I initially regretted buying grey ink but it has come to be one of my favourites. The light blue tinged lighter greys like this one are great, especially on offwhite paper :puddle:

My bottle of Encre Grise Nuage is almost empty because I use it often. I must buy more. I use it in my silver/gray Esterbrook with 9968 nib so it's thicker than a pencil, but the color is similar to a pencil. I'm curious to try other grays.

Thanks for the review, but your scan looks quite dark on my monitor. With EEF nibs, my Gris Nuage writes closer to silver, and I had to add some Perle Noire to darken the ink.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
