Info wanted on Pelikan Nib

Hi guys, I'm hoping to pick at your collective brains and superior knowledge here :D

I bought a second hand M800 (green stripe barrel) yesterday and it is in marvelous condition, ie. looks new. When I had a closer look at the nib, other than some white marks/stains on the feed, on closer inspection I saw that the Medium nib was actually 20C/833 gold! I have never seen nor even heard of a 20kt Pelikan nib. I was hoping someone else could shed some light on this?

I'm assuming these nibs came on M800 pens. Any idea of when they were made and if they were for a special edition or something? I'm now just smiling at this windfall, the original owner didn't even know their pen had a 20kt nib on it and was genuinely surprised when I contacted them about it!

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

20K Pelikan nibs are only made for the Asian market to compete with the 21K Sailor nibs.

An aside- is there any real benefit to 20 or 21 rather than the usual 14? Or 18 for that matter? I own a number of gold nibs, and they're all 14k. I haven't actually owned or used long-term anything higher. I have had a few chances to test higher stuff, but I didn't notice any real difference. That could just be me though.

IMO, only in the mind of the user. Not that I mind my 18K or 21K nibs, but they don't have any particular advantage that I can see. They have some slight disadvantage if you're into customizing in that folks like Richard Binder won't (or prefers not to, can't recall for sure) add flex to an 18K nib (presumably then, a 21K nib). You'd have to check his site for an explanation.

My 21K nibs feel a little "softer" than 14K. BUT, they are not Pelikan nibs and that springyness may be due to the design, not the gold content.

I think it's largely about what is perceived as "quality". Just my .02

Hi,

There is improved corrosion resistance and also some extra bragging rights, but the nibs are a little unpredictable when you are talking about flex, adjustments, and things like that.

HI Feye

I bought one yesterday that was a new M800 green/black with the same nib.

There are few around from what I can see.

Are you still enjoying it??

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
