I'm not impressed with the water resistance of this ink, but of course it isn't a waterproof ink to begin with.

Thanks for looking! :)

Someone was looking for a "rust" colored ink yesterday. Maybe this one is it!

Currently Inked: Visconti Pericle EF : Aurora Black; Pilot VP-F (Gunmetal): X-Feather; Pilot VP-F (LE Orange): Kiowa Pecan; Lamy Safari EF: Legal Lapis

No, I don't think someone looking for a rust colored ink would want this one--it's too red--it's a red-orange. However, Diamine Monaco Red would perhaps satisfy a person looking for more of a rust color.

Thanks for another wonderful review, Ann. I was just thinking yesterday that I should write up a review for this ink; several inks have been on my to-review list, including this one.

I've always thought of this as an orange-red. You've really captured it beautifully.

THIS is the ink that I use when I want to do a markup. While many reds dry too dark, this stays bright.

Thanks for the review! I got this ink in a six pack of Levenger inks for Christmas but haven't got a chance to write with it.

Thanks Ann! I loved that you added a picture of the pen you used. I'm a big fan of matching pen and ink combos, especially for those annoying pens that don't have ink windows. Plus, it's always a pleasure to see your handwriting.

Have you tried this ink on cream paper? It really seems to bring out the orange, which is nice if you have an orange motif or border.

Hi Ann,

Yet another great review! Gotta ask about the drying time (you know how us lefties are) - fast or slow? Smearing?

Thanks,

Michael

Great ink for marking student papers. I have used it for about a year in the Levenger True Writer Demonstrator with a medium nib. Very well behaved, quick start up, and seems especially good for projects where you write in fits and starts with long pauses between marks. It doesn't dry out in the feed like some other inks I have used for marking student work. My favorite Levenger ink.

I don't believe I have tried this ink on cream paper--but I can picture it now, sounds like a great idea! Thanks! :)

Michael, if you look at the last line of the review, I showed what I thought would signify that the drying time is fast...At 2 sec. there was a little smear, but at 4 sec. the ink was dry and there was no smearing with a swipe my finger.

Thanks to all for the comments.

Somehow I missed that.

I had heard that drying time was a problem for Levenger inks. It would appear it's only a problem for some of them. Now the question is, "Which ones?"

  • 4 years later...

I know this thread is ancient, but I stumbled upon it, and I wanted to add that Fireball is an ink that changes in character over time. When I leave it in a pen for a while it tends to become a much darker red color. It's not quite as dark as Oxblood, but it's way darker than the original Fireball color.

Here's a link to the pics on my blog.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
