Thanks for the review, Ann. This is the nicest grey available, in my opinion.

How easy is it to read at night under artificial lighting? I have trouble with some of the Herbin shades fading to nothing when I'm trying to transcribe onto the computer. How would this one read? I really like that and think it'd be more soothing than a more saturated black shade, but I'd hate to strain my eyes at night.

As always, Ann, another great review! That is a nice looking gray and the silvery aspect comes through in your scans. Thanks.

[runs off screaming, "I don't need another ink! I don't need another ink! I don't need another ink! . . . but come to think of it, I don't have a non-waterproof gray. ;) I don't need another ink! I don't need another ink!]

Ghost, I did the review in the evening under artificial lighting and didn't have any problem reading what I was writing. I don't think it would strain your eyes to read it, as say, a pale yellow would. Hope that helps!

That is a lovely color, and your wonderful penmanship sets it off beautifully!

I wonder if I will like the color as much in my own handwriting. :hmm1:

Dear Ann, I like the shading of this color although I wold probably never use a grey ink. However, I thank you for this insightful review. Wonderful handwriting, too! I wished I could write like you.

Thanks, Ann. After trying to read Herbin's Vert Olive under incandescent light, it's now a regular question I ask about inks. Definitely goes on my "to be tried" list.

Beautiful writing. How does this gray compare w/ Noodler's Lexington Gray? I just ordered a bottle of that to fill my Xezo Architect. It has a ribbed, titanium finish, that I thought the ink would compliment.

Ann,

Thanks for the review. I had never thought about using a grey ink, but your review has made me rethink that.

Tony, I've never had Noodler's Lexington Grey, but I've seen it in snails. The Noodler's looks darker to me than the Omas.

Thanks to everyone for the response & kind words.

Ann, I like this grey very much. Where did you purchase it? Or who else carries Omas inks?

Cedar

Cedar, I purchased this ink on a recent visit to Pendemonium. Two other retailers that carry Omas inks that I can think of offhand are Swisher's and Pear Tree Pen Co. All of these folks are great to deal with--no affiliation with any of them, but glad to give them all an affirmative plug :).

Hello Ann,

When and where have you bougth this ink?, because now the grey omas ink has a grey colour with brown shades.

Thank's

Omas' Grey is one of the few inks I've bought more than one bottle of:

http://people.freenet.de/pensninks/Omas%20Ink/Omas_Gray_1996.jpg

I bought the first bottle around 1996 and this ink is a very elegant medium grey ink with very slight purple hues.

Compared to many other greys which look either like faded black or have "dirty" brownish tones, Omas' Grey from 1996 is a very "clean" and elegant color which really looks special. In my opinion it is not only the nicest grey ink I know, but also one of my favorite inks.

When I bought a new bottle of Omas' Grey last year (2004) the ink formula must have been changed completely!

This ink is a warm medium grey with red and brown tones; it doesn't look like the Omas' Grey ink from 1996 at all.

In my opinion the change of the ink formula in terms of colors has been to the worse.

After I got a bottle of the "new" grey I didn't like, I thought that I must get a bottle of the old style grey as long as the older formula was still available.

The third bottle of Omas' Grey I got can be dated around 2000 (from the design of its box).

Again this color was totally different from the other two Omas' Greys I have. This is a much lighter medium grey which almost looks like a grey purple ink.

I bought my bottle of Omas Grey less than 2 months ago on November 24, 2007 when visiting Pendemonium. My bottle has the gold label that Michael R. has shown. The color of my ink is as shown in the review. Fortunately, this is the color I was expecting.

Best, Ann

I am looking for a nice ink to replace my discontinued Levenger Smokey. This is definitely in the running. :)

Currently inked: Twsbi Fine with Diamine Hope Pink, Lamy Vista with Heart of Darkness/Levenger Raven Black mix, Parker Sonnet with Levenger Cocoa.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
