Usual disclaimer: Color representation unfortunately cannot always be accurate due to the use of a scanner, reproduction of the scan in various computer monitors, and variations in pen/paper characteristics.

I really like this color, but it dries much too slowly for regular use by a left-handed over-writer like me!

I think of Midnight Blues as a "dark purple-blue". It really benefits from a wetter pen -- if it goes on too thin, it looks kind of dull (and you're right: zero shading).

Brian,

A purple-blue? Wow. Our eyes see differently. One of the reasons I like Midnight Blues is that it I see it as a dark blue without a violet/purple/red component. I'd describe it as a dark blue-dark grey/black.

The scans in this review, on my monitor, are a lighter, brighter, blue than my experience with the ink. The scans look sort of half-way between Midnight Blues (a dark, "business-like conservative" blue) and Lake Placid (a "playful, pretty" blue).

Likely, and mine might be the defective ones, but it definitely looks that way to me. It's odd -- I asked two other people how it looked to them. One said it had a little purple tint, the other said it had none. I did a little desktop paper-strip chromatography, and to my eye the ink separated into three subdued greens and a fairly intense cobalt blue. The person who thought the ink had a purplish tint saw the separation the same way, with no purples or reds. On the other hand, the person who saw no purple in the mixed ink thought that the blue component had a purple cast. ???

Thanks for your scan. And yep, your scan does indeed look darker than mine. What is the nib size on your CdA Dunas? I'm wondering what accounts for the variation. Perhaps it's the nib size or could be the pen entirely. I may try PR Midnight Blue in a CdA Ecridor w/ an F nib to see if I can see any variation from my original post using the Dupont Orpheo.

belive it or not, it has an F engraved on it , but it feels more like a med.

but, i get the same effect with all the pens i use this ink, including an inexpensive wingsung with a fine point.

i'll see if i can do a scan with 3 of my pens that are inked with MBlues!!!! gimme some time to get around it.

best regards,

Midnight Blues was once my favorite ink. It's still one of my favorite colors, but I've developed some kind of mental weirdness that requires me to use somewhat waterproof inks. Anyway, the color I'm getting is closer to girlieg33k's ...

PR Midnight Blues is actually a very dark blue with a tinge of gray-green, at least to my eyes. The green is easier to see in the lighter, shaded portions of writing. Every bottle I have bought has the green tinge and I confirmed this by spectrophotometric analysis of the ink dissolved in water and appropriately diluted. Of course, not every person has the same color perception, so some may or may perceive this ink color the same way. Unless both the scanner and viewing monitor are color-calibrated, viewing scanned ink swatches or colors on the web can be a dicey issue.

If you want a pretty pure, dark blue (no greenish or reddish tinges), try a 1:1 mix of Midnight Blues and Black Magic Blue. A spectrophotometric analysis of this mixture showed more balanced red and green absorption bands than either of the individual inks.

Somewhere on this site is a highly geeky spectrophotometric plot of these two inks and the mix. But to me the mix (Magic Midnight Mix) looks pure, dark cobalt blue.

Cheers.

In my Pilot Cavalier Fine Point

Midnight Blues is a little darker than Black Magic Blue.

Both beautiful colours but I like Midnight Blues more.

Too bad! I'm a left handed underwriter and I have no smear issues. Beuatiful ink I use in in my current everyday writer a demi Parker "51" Another nice review!

Can anyone with midnight blues and the new DC electric blue comment on how similar they are?

Stephen,

While both are blue and the scans may look similar, PR DCEB appears darker, yet brighter (as in has a punch). Side-by-side, I'd say PR MB is more sedate. Hope that makes sense.

Do you also have DCSS Blue? I think I recall it from your reviews. I'd love to see a scanned three-way comparison between MB, DCEB, and DCSS. I gather from your comments that DCEB is slightly darker than DCSS but remains "vivid blue" unlike MB which is more blue-black.

I haven't used Levenger Cobalt Blue for a long time due to smearing, but it seems like it also would be close.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
