I've just received my bottle of the new Diamine Saddle Brown ink from the good people at The Writing Desk. I don't have a scanner, so I'm afraid that you'll have to make to do with two photographs instead.

 

I'm pleased to say that Diamine finally has a decent dark brown. (Anyone who's ever tried what's marketed as 'Diamine Dark Brown' will know what I mean.) This is nowhere near as dark as, say, Noodler's Walnut or Rohrer and Klingner Sepia, though; I'd put it on roughly the same level of darkness as Conway Stewart Brown. Flow is excellent (as always seems to be the case with Diamine), and the colour -- as you can see from the images -- shades rather nicely. In the lighter parts of the lines, I see a vague hint of terracotta (but nothing as reddish as Herbin Terre de Feu, say).

 

If I don't mention something about water resistance, Viseguy the hydromaniac will only ask, so let me add that a quick run of the sheet under a cold tap washed off most of the ink, but enough of the colour remained for the letters still to be clearly legible.

Thanks for the review - I'm a recent convert to Diamine inks (indeed, I use Diamine Indigo and Aurora Black pretty much exclusively now) and now I need this Saddle Brown too. Drat.

Thanks, Neil! I like Conway Stewart Brown but wish it had more shading properties. Based on your review, I am now a lot more interested in Saddle Brown!

I'd say that Saddle Brown is a bit like a more interesting version of CS Brown.

Thanks for the scan, Neil. I ordered the few of the new Diamine colors from The Writing Desk before I logged on to FPN this morning, and after seeing this, I'm so glad that Diamine Saddle Brown was among one of the ones I ordered. Like blueiris, I really like CS Brown but wish it had more shading properties. Saddle Brown also reminds me a darker version of Delta Brown as well (a review of which I have sitting on my desk!), but again, the shading properties of Delta Brown are not as obvious as Saddle Brown. Thanks again!

I'd love to see a scan of this ink on some nice unruled, creamy manuscript-type paper. Drool... though the photos you took do make the paper look kind of creamy, but ruled lines spoil the vintage look.

 

Again, thanks and curses for bringing this ink to me attention.

Oh wow, that's so, like, totally cool, dude...

Now I actually need to get some cream paper. And the ink itself. I have a Moleskine notebook but the paper is quite temperamental - it doesn't like Diamine Indigo but I've had no problems with other inks.

Your curiosity about the water-resistance of inks intrigues me, and leads me to conclude that you must do an awful lot writing in the rain or while swimming.

I've been hooked on the brown ink debate as a Noodlers Walnut and Herbin Chocolate Brown kind of girl, but could I respond to the side-issue of the notebook question? I've tried searching for this topic on the FPN site, but haven't quite found the information I need.... As Patrick says, Moleskine notebook paper is temperamental. I currently use the A4 and A5 Clairefontaine notebooks, but (I don't think) they do a narrow-lined cream paper version. Any tips for a consistent ink-proof cream pad? Thanks.

I purchased my Apica and Belfort notebooks from taylorsintherockies on eBay. The paper is super smooth and very fountain pen friendly. I think they're much better than the Black 'n Red notebooks, and seriously rival the Clairefontaine notebooks in smoothness.

I am also very interested in how inks are affected by water and I do not write while swimming almost ever... But I do live in Oregon and am outside a lot. Many things I write will either get wet or often get a highlighter used on them and some inks hold up pretty well and others do not. There are some inks I love the color of but can not use based on the one aspect of how they handle water. Thanks for the review and for thinking of us who write while snorkeling!

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
