New Parker 45

Hi,

on this article from Stylophiles online, the reviewer rates the writing performance and smoothness of the modern Parker 45 as very good, more than more expensive pen.

Have you ever tried an, how would you rate it compared to other pens from same or higher price range ?

thanks

The new Parker 45...

A simply great pen at a great price that will write circles around many more expensive pens.

I'd also say that it's as good as the original which was also a great pen.

Yes, it's very good indeed. A word of warning, though; if you buy a set with the ballpoint, you'll find the ballpoint is disappointingly light and rattly, nothing like the old, more substantial and solid version.

They are still in production, I believe, but not many U.S. sellers are stocking them. Try Pendemonium, or Shlomo Ginsberg in Kansas.

I agree that the newest 45s are still good quality, even if I don't like some of the new styling features quite as much. However, you can get a replacement 14K point (XF, F, M, B) from Parker Janesville by sending in your 45 (which comes w/ a medium gold-plated steel nib) and $5. This is good until Janesville runs out of the 14K nibs.

Yes, it is a great pen.

But I am not comfortable with the fairly large breather hole underneath the clip. This didn't exist in the old version. I think it is for people to breath if they accidentally swallow the cap. But I think ink could come out to soil your shirt pocket. Not a big chance as it is below the inner cap, but nevertheless makes me nervous and keep checking the inner cap for ink.

I have banged arouond a couple of new 45's for quite a while and have not had any issues with leakage from the breather and found that even after long breaks, the new 45 writes when the nib hits paper.

It really is an amzingly good pen at an excellent price and being able to swap the plated nib for a 14k for $5.00 is an amazing deal as well.

Thanks Keith:

This is comforting to know.

I wonder if we can send the nib in for 14K gold nib in Canada.

My experience with Sanford in Canada has been just so so.

Hi,

Very few places still sells that here. I did see a book store in Taiwan selling one for about 30 USD. The bookstore was an authorized dealer or Mont Blanc and I did see a few other pens like the Starwalker. Maybe I will pick one up next time I go on vacation. The most common finish now is the flighter.

Hi Mafiablues,

Of course you can buy a 45 on Ebay, but I have a suggestion. Send an email to Ger van Oers, a penseller from The Netherlands. Ger can be reached at: gwvanoers@home.nl. He has all kinds of pens in stock, so perhaps he has one for you. He is very reliable and charges low shipping costs. I bought my 45 from Ger.

BUT!!!!!

I’m not as enthusiastic about the 45 as other people, let alone Stylophiles. I have three objections.

- Although the nib is very smooth, it definitely has a soft spot; if you miss it, the pen skips. Very annoying.

- If you post the cap, your flighter barrel will be scratched terribly. Within a day!

- From a distance the pen is lovely and looks very expensive. But when you give the pen a good look, you will see it is really cheap. The section has a plastic look and feel. Look at that black “jewel” on top of the cap. It is not my taste.

So, if you really want to buy a 45, buy a vintage. If you want a new Parker, you should definitely buy a Frontier. It is cheaper, but the quality is much better, much better. And I also like the more austere looks of the Frontier.

If Ger van Oers is out of pens, perhaps you can consider to buy my 45…..

Hi,

The 45 is coming to me now. :) I have a 1960 45 cap. I will send the pen to Parker UK to get the barrel fixed up.

Thanks Johan :)

I agree with JohanO - I´ve got two new Parker 45´s, one flighter and one burgundy, and I´m not so enthusiastic about them... Both the nibs tend to be scratchy, and have very definite sweet spots. Since factory nib exchange is not possible where I live, in the end I replaced one of them by a gold nib I took from an old pen. The new feed is as good as the old one, though, and the ink flow is perfect.

I dont like the new caps either - looks much cheaper than the old ones (the plastic jewel is obviously, well, plastic). I´ve also replaced the cap of my new pen by an old gold plated one. I now have a very hybrid pen, with nib and cap plucked from an old pen, but I think the result looks and writes much better than the original...

If I were to buy a new Parker, I think I would go for a Frontier, too.

regards,

Rique

Thanks Rique, for our mutual agreement on the modern Parker 45. I cleaned the pen several times, and still it was scratchy and skipped in every line. Besides, it looks like a cheap Asian $5 pen.

Dillon and I agreed that this 45 wants to live in the USA; I do hope that Dillon does have a good time with it!

Nevertheless, I still want to hear some more negative feedback on the 45! Just to convince myself that I’m not a lonely Mad Dutchman like Wim! ;)

Johan

p.s. Here's the evil pen!

Hi,

To tell you the truth, it actually writes a lot like the Parker Reflex and Vector. It starts up instantly. It is quite beautiful. The clip does not snag as easily as that of the 1960 45 and is stronger. The cap clutch is stronger than that of the 1960 45, and they moved the breather hole from the inner cap to under the clip. The breather hole change prevents the nib from drying out. The inner cap seals around the front of the section. I like the 45.

Whether you like it or not is a matter or personal opinion though. Do not take me for the average person, I am far from average.

It has been discontinued again! Hopefully it is only temporarily down for some much-needed improvements.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
