The guests are here! I'll be borrowing my friend's flex collection for a couple of weeks. (I'll be doing flex comparisons of them later)

From left to right-- may I introduce:

-Waterman 12 c. 1905 (ED)

-Aikin Lambert c. 1905 (ED)

-John Holland 74 c. 1916 (Hatchet-filler)

-Waterman 42 Octagonal Continental Safety c. 1927 (ED)

-John Mottishaw modern extra fine superflex Namiki Falcon (C/C)

edit: I had to add the sunglasses post icon!

Here they are after they took off their hats (in the same order as before):

edit: Since you probably can't read the nib imprints from the photo, I'll transcribe what is visible (i.e. not hidden under section) here (from left to right):

-WATERMAN ☆ IDEAL ("IDEAL" is partially hidden)

-AIKIN LAMBERT CO. No. 2

-FINE -JOHN- HOLLAND CIN. C. 14

-WATERMAN'S 585 IDEAL REG. U.S.

-14K-585 NAMIKI <SF> B206

I hope all this info will help someone in the future!

(BTW, does anybody know what it all means? lol)

Don't you all wish that I could take better pictures? headsmack.gif

The Waterman Octagonal is esp. unique-- reminds me of a turtle! This is WO immediately after uncapping:

P.S. The bottom of the Octagonal says "42" in red. (Does the color mean anything?)

Thanks ever so much to my dear friend who let me borrow this beautiful bunch! They are all superflex, and have extra-fine tips (save the Waterman silver overlay-- it has a fine nib).

The filling system of the Octagonal is strange (to me, anyway), too: The Octagonal fills directly up in the hiding-turtle stage. (Normal EDs usually are filled up by unscrewing the section, right?) Weird! blink.gif

The Waterman safety is wonderful, they always fill like that. Just remember to always open it pointing up and keep it that way until the nib is fully extended. wink.gif cool.gif smile.gif

And yes, regular ed's fill by unscrewing the section. They're great for the amount of ink they hold. They can be a little troublesome/unpredictable in the flow dept as the ink supply runs down.

What wonderful pens, Hana! I can hardly wait to see what beautiful script you create with these vintage nibs. I was surprised not to see "Miss Swan" in your line up. Isn't "she" a "Superstar of the flex world"? If not, perhaps it might be interesting to see how the vintage nibs compare to your modified "Miss Swan" that we all have grown to love.

To answer one of your questions:

The red is original wax from the manufacturer to make the pen number more visible. See Mr. Mottishaw's site for pictures of other vintage Waterman pens with the same wax coloring.

Miss Swan is one of the hosts. I just took a picture of all the guests! roflmho.gif (Ahh, thank you for humoring me)

They've all filled up on some good vintage stuff right now (the gold top NOS Skrip blue-black), and will start dancing shortly.

Thanks for the wax info! I guess the wax on the other Waterman's worn off.

Wheres a good camera when you need it. I have a Waterman 12 chased mint with sticker and the red wax in the holes in the cap. Good stuff. Hopefully, my parents willget a "good" camera so I can take some pics of my pens.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
