What pen is your Holy Grail?

What is that pen that you are constantly searching for, and when you have found it, personal circumstances keep you from buying it at the moment, but you still keep yearning for it?

Mine is the Conway Stewart Churchill in bracket brown resin. At 500 US Dollars, it definitely is the stuff of dreams, as it will remain just a dream.

I want a Dunhill Leather Sidecar, but whenever I get enough money for one, I always spend it on something more practical.

A nice Double Jewel Parker 51 in Cedar Blue with a Sterling Cap or Cordovan with a Fishscale or Coronet Gold Cap with a third quarter 1948 date code to coincide with my birthday.

BUT ALAS, 'twill never be since they did not make that pen in 1948... but I will accept an earlier one.

I already have two Flighters (would not mind finding a pencil) and a Cedar Blue 51 Vac with a factory stub nib, so I am all set there...

Only the pure in heart may find the Holy Grail. To be pure in heart, one must be free from desire. Therefore, be content. Here endeth the lesson.

A very nice condition Sheaffer's Snorkel Triumph or Masterpiece (the 14k filled or solid 14k) set in its box. They are so awesome, but alas, so expensive. Maybe one day I will find a good deal. Oh yes, the nib would have to be maybe a stub. Yes, that sounds nice. Yes, if you have one and dont like it, just send it to 5555 General Avenue; Ordinary, Alaska; ZIP 55555. Thanks! Hehehehe! biggrin.gif

Sheaffer all the way!

MB Kafka--

I have always liked the design, and I am a huge Kafka fan...but the tipping point was last week in Prague, when I finally got the pen in hand. It is beautiful.

I caved in and called fountain pen hospital, and it is now enroute.

As soon as I have it reground to XXF, pics will be posted!

I'm hopefully having a special occasion to celebrate happen soon. I'd like to send ***my*** Densho home to Japan to get a Urushi coating and possibly a tiny piece of Makei. I'm not sure this is possible from the technical point of view or the businesss one, though.

One of the bamboo (susutake) pens from the Nagahara series by Sailor. Always wonder if I'll ever get to see them in person...

I haven't been actively searching but I would really like a pen with an "Iridium Point St. Louis" nib.

First quarter, 1945 Parker ANYTHING...Vac, 51, Challenger, Royal Challenger

User grade is acceptable, since all my pens are for use, not for show.

For the reason cited by many...

Now...I wonder how many PMs are being sent by the pen purveyors to folks who have said, like me, they want pens from a particular era/time. NOW that would be an interesting poll....

Ben,

Try looking for a "Blue Jay" pen. IIRC they were made in St. Louis in the 30's & 40's.

An interesting question and one that, for me at least, has changed over time....

Perhaps 10 years ago it would have been a Pelikan 800. Over the past year or two I was leaning toward a CS Churchill in the chased ebonite limited edition finish - but I'm not sure the huge size is right for me and was leaning more towards the Duro ...

But most recently I've been bitten by the vintage bug so at this point:

* I'd agree with Griz on a double jewel "51" with a lined sterling cap in used but near mint condition (factory stub would be sweet but not necessary),

* A rage red "51" MKIII (perhaps Richard will post a picture of his - can't get enough pen porn...)

* And last but not least, a maxima Vac in Azure blue with near mint transparency!!!!

A pen a day keeps the doctor away...

I didn't really know what I was searching for till thanks to some posts on this site I ran into Nakaya pens.

Looking at their range of pens I had epiphany after epiphany.

Barring unforeseen events at tax season I shall order an Ishi-me Kan-shitsu technique pen in black.

Personal circumstances (having left the business world for a life in poetry) will probably keep me from getting the same pen with a music nib in a silver finish.

That event would take me across the great river of spending a thousand dollars on a single pen.

It’s kind of a battle right now between finishing redecorating the rest of my house and starting a serious Nakaya collection.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
