New Noodlers Ink:El Lawrence

Recommended Posts

I searched for a review of this ink and could not find one.So here it is:

This Noodler's Ink was a new one to me.I really liked the colours as dark browns and grey colours are my favourites. So i figured i would give it a shot.It is one of Noodlers Eternal inks and bulletproof.

The first impressions were of dirty motor oil.Greyish, brackish and dark. But this is a colour i can warm up to fast!!

Here is a shot of it on standard #20 Hammermill paper:

Forgive my noticeably hurried penmanship as i was excited at getting this review in and not really concentrating!! :P

It really didn't feather at all and the pen used was a Tryphon Clef with a fine nib.

Then i decided to try a different paper. This time i used a #60 Astroparch Vellum Finish Wausau paper. It looks like parchment a wee bit and is solid.

So far i really like this ink.Being a die hard historian,i even fell for the bottle itself!!!

Adorned with a photo of TE Lawrence(Lawrence of Arabia)himself on a motorbike!

Before he became the famous writer, poet, philosopher and lover of all things Arab,he was a cartographer. And this ink does him justice!!

Here is a photo of the bottle:

I hope this review helps.

I do want to add that i also ordered a bottle of the Russian series of inks named after the writer Pushkin. But i noticed that it was nothing like the ink on the webpage.Seems that the bottle was labeled Pushkin but the ink is most certainly Akhmatova green. So i await confirmation from the distributor i ordered it from.Hopefully i can review the other soon.

Thanks for letting me share!!!

It's much more brown than I thought it'd be! I thought it'd be more green, but I do like the way it looks on my monitor much better.

Adendum to ink issue:

After an email to the distributor of Noodlers concerning the Pushkin colour,i have been informed that the colour of Noodler's Pushkin is a green, not a grey that the swish shows on the web page. This would be at Pendemonium.

So if you plan on ordering Pushkin, expect an avocado type green.

I will be posting a review of this ink sometime soon.

It is a nice green but not what i really wanted.Nonetheless,i will keep it.

I really like the look of the El Lawrence. I hear it's balky for some people--no problems with flow for you?

The Pushkin sounds interesting as well. I wasn't interested in gray, but a murky green is much more intriguing to me.

Isn't sanity really a one-trick pony, anyway? I mean, all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy . . . ooh hoo hoo hoo! . . . the sky's the limit!

I admit i have had a few issues today with it.My Tryphon has a smaller nib and occasionally it doesn't flow as well. But it is a minor issue(so far).

Good to know about that though.

I have both of these inks as well, and while Handlebar's scans of Pushkin look pretty accurate, my El Lawrence is not nearly so brown as this appears. Maybe our bottles are different, but mine is more of a deep khaki green (!) whatever that means .. I have not had any problems that the others reported with this ink, and in fact it is one of the smoother flowing inks I own. I am also a history buff, wanna-be cartographer, and lover of greens and browns! :P

Handlebar: whose poetry are you displaying so nicely? I hope you tell me that you wrote it yourself! :)

Alas,Marina,i cannot take credit for the poetry. My poems are usually about music(what few i have written LOL)

The lines here are from Robert Frost. He is one of,if not my favourite, poets.

Thanks for the kind words though. Thanks to all who have been so kind.

I feel so loved here :P :P :P :P

As regards the colour:Maybe my batch is a wee bit darker. Not sure.I did detect more green today(actually more olive)but still mainly brownish.

I like this colour!!!

I've got El Lawrence and really like the vintage-looking color. I can tell it doesn't flow as well as some others, but it dries very quickly. Pen choice is critical. I have mine in a Sailor 1911 full size with H-M nib. I picked it up today after the pen had been sitting unused for over a week. Immediate start up. :D :D :D (FWIW, this is very, very likely one of the earlier batches before the formulation was tweaked a bit - IIRC.)

UPDATE:

I have now used the El Lawrence in a few different pens over the last couple of weeks. It does have some issues with flow.Tends to bind up a wee bit in my pens with smaller feed systems. The Stipula and Signum are handling it rather well but even then, still exhibit a slow start now and then.

The colour makes up for that issue though.I think this bottle will last quite awhile though.

I just grabbed my 1911 with Noodlers El Lawrence, which has been sitting neglected for quite some time, likely 3+ weeks. Guess what? Immediate start. Pen choice is very critical, but I can tell this ink doesn't flow as well as some others, but the vintage look is wonderful!

I didn't like this at first but I can't get it out of my mind! It's not like the bright fancy colors I usually use (like Ottoman Rose, for instance) but it has a real character to it and I like the vintage look. I think the comments about cartography opened it up to me. Nice ink.

**Edit**

Hahaha....I noticed that Pendemonium is now out of El Lawrence. I have a suspicion it's because of this thread!

  • 1 month later...

A friend surprised me with a bottle of El Lawrence! She even flushed my Parker Duoffold before filling it up. A couple of hours after she left, we chatted online and I told her that my mother will love her. The new ink inspired me to do something that I've never done in a very, very long time: write my mother a proper letter. Maryanne, my friend, thanks!

...and I think that motorbike might have been (unless I am mistaken) a Brough Superior. The man had taste... :)

Hi,

I too like El Lawrence. Here are pictures I took. I bought a bottle at the 2005 or 2006 Boston Pen Show. Can't remember. When I bought two more as a back up I noticed a color change. As you can see from the photos the black stuff at the bottom of the bottle, black ink I suppose, has separated out of the solution. I like the lighter color so I am always careful not to shake the 3 bottles I have. I do shake all my other Noodlers ink before I fill. I also have to wait a bit sometimes for the Bullet Proof ink to "de-foamatize". (Air to come out of the mixture) I have tested the waterproofness of the light green El ink and have always been satisfied as to the inks permanence. I keep saying this but if not for Noodlers water proof / almost proof inks I might as well write with a crayon.

Hope you like the pictures (I hope they load.)

Dave

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
