Reform Red

Found some Reform Red at a nearby art supply store, thought I'd give it a try. Been looking for a red to try, and figure I won't spot this one too often. It's a hard color to describe (and reproduce!). All in all, it's not terribly saturated, so it shows up kind of pinkish. It's very bright though, and it's not too pink, unless (as evidenced in the dip sample) your pen is a horribly dry writer. I wrote on the sample that it seemed a hint yellow. More and more I realize that if anything it's a hint magenta, although not so much as the dry sections of the sample would have you believe. Regardless, it's not 100% red. But it is bright, and seems to be rather free-flowing. It's also probably not the easiest thing in the world to track down, so I hope nobody likes it too much... :P

You'll have to take this with a grain of salt for a couple of reasons... First, I like fine, dry nibs that don't typically shade much at all... Second, I don't really care much about shading and therefore probably can't assess the property all that well. I also haven't written the ink much yet. That being said, my guess is that it's fairly flat, as it shows up on the sample. But if it were to shade (in a nib more tailored toward such) I believe it would go from a bright pinkish-red to a pale pink. Sorry I can't be of more help!

There's no need to apologize! Thanks for the review. I should have noticed that there is no sign of shading on the sample..

Thanks for the quick look!

Southpaw! Thanks for inadvertently reminding me! The Reform Red ink dries quite quickly, which I know is good information for many of the left-handed folk out there! Also good information for people who just don't like to wait to turn a page. :)

  • 11 years later...

I find a regular flex nib in M and F shade well, if the ink will.

Semi-flex or a wet nib must be matched paper and ink to shade.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
