As promised, finally a written review of Noodler's Cayenne, with a variety of nibs:

I found the differences caused by different nibs rather eye-opening. Never noticed these differences this clearly before!

Thank you for the kind words.

I have started doing ink reviews with a variety of nibs, because people always say how different it looks from their ink samples . I reckoned with a variety of nibs, you would just be able to see the possibilities, and I must admit, I am quite amazed myself .

Wow, that's amazing. All those variations from one pen! Maybe there's hope for a couple of my (I think) less attractive inks, after all. Thanks for sharing that!

Sorry, I am getting a little confused. Do you mean the variation/shading with the medium wet nibs? Or did you mean ink instead of pen?
I used a total of 7 pens in the review, of which 4 were dip pens, 3 fountain pens of which 1 has a dual nib, sharpish italic BB on one side, and medium stub reversed. So, actually, 8 different nibs (although I wrote very little with 3 of them).

Sigh - from the Mad Dutchman's excellent sample above
we learn that it is of no use whatsoever trying to discuss
the colour of an fp ink -- unless we use the same nib :-),
the same paper, the same hand pressure, the same...

I suspect that this is impossible, but could we include ink flow/clog properties into ink reviews, ie i hear bad things about certain inks clogging feeds etc, and even sometimes damaging pens due to ph value.
Perhaps theres already a definitive list but considering the sheer number of pen variety and inks available I doubt this.
Really it's because I'm keen to try inks other than the manufacturers in my pens, but im afraid to clog them up.

Q-Tips should be standard...

No such need, I think. Just get out a bunch of pens with different nibs and different flow characteristics, and show off the versatility of the particular ink. The range and depth of the variation in hue and density gives at least some idea of what to expect, which is why I tried so many nibs and pens .

This is possible, but would take an extensive testing time, and specialised equipment too.

No need to be afraid. Just make sure you flush and rinse the pen, before you take it out of rotation. Do the same prior to changing inks, so the inks don't react with each other. And finally, every month or so do a flush and rinse, if you want to feel really assured.
Anyway, the pH-list on the indicated web site should give you some ideas.

But seriously: this is why I used the enormous wide monster nib, to show a "swab" like effect. The problem with swabs is that it depends on pressure, amount of ink absorbed, etc. as well, so that isn't a reliable technique either.
Generally, I find Greg's samples to be much darker than the ink in real life, and it is a single sample only.

And I just like fiddling with lots of different pens and nibs, too, which for me is one of the best reasons to do an ink review this way .
