I received today a black Pilot G78 from HisNibs and my what a swanky little pen for a little bit of money. Black with gold trim, elegant, simple, very light and the B nib lays down a very nice line, like a small stub allowing you to see nice variation and shading in the ink. If you have an opportunity, this is just a really nice buy!

Pump style? It has a sac, with two bars on either side that you squeeze and let fill from the bottle.

Alright thanks, that is actually a pretty nice pen, it has a classic design, very cheap considering the style, but is it a consistent writer so if I used it for school, I can always rely on it?

Thanks
Brad

I've only owned it a day, but I can't imagine why it wouldn't be reliable. It doesn't have a huge capacity (I suppose more than a short cartridge but it is not like an eyedropper or anything), so if you do a TON of writing you might want to have a bottle of ink with you to refill.

I have two of these with Fine (more like XF) nibs, and they are great!

Very smooth (I agree 100% with the "shockingly-smooth" comment) and reliable writers! smile.gif

I've had a fine-nibbed one for a week (also from HisNibs) and it's been the pen I reach for when I "just need to write something" ever since. It's very reliable. My vintage pens are not pleased at this turn of events.

The fine is closer to XF and a bit dry, but I love the way it writes.

I also received my Teal G78 with an F nib from Norman. A sweet little pen. It also takes cartridges, btw. But I filled it with Tahitian Pearl, which suits it well.
I enhanced the dry nib a bit by spreading the tines. Now it joins the line of my Japanese favourites.

Edit: added pic. (Sailors Pro Gear and 60s pocket pen, Pilots Elite, 78G and Décimo).

It does? Do you take out the little pump system?

Thanks for the tip! Most of my pens are vintage, and one of the first things I thought while looking over my new 78G was, "How can I get this out to replace the sac?" Reflexive thought -- hopefully the material is durable and I won't have to worry about it anytime soon!

I'm still awaiting shipment of more of the pens with the 'B' nib, but I wanted to alert everyone that I've gotten in a shipment of the 'M' and 'F' nibs, including...for the first time...the Teal in 'F'.

I have had my little Pilot in hand for about a week. I have the B nib, and it is very unusual for its italic nature. I think it is a really nice pen, it writes very nicely, and I will no doubt spring for another.

I picked up a couple of these from Norm. They are great pens, a fantastic quality to price ratio. All are excellent writers. The broad nib is an incredible bargain for the $$$$. smile.gif9

I purchased my first Pilot 78G from Norman. He was out of the F nibs, so I purchased an M nib to see how I liked it. I subsequently purchased 3 more of them in F, which has been my preferred nib size for lo these many decades, unless I have something expressive to write. I do a lot of writing each day, and much of it is equations and diagrams.

I am, by and large, disappointed in much of what the industry has to offer these days in very fine nibs, but one cannot be but satisfied with the Pilots. They are nearly the smoothest nibs that I have used in this size. And the lightness really pays off in the field. I have noticed that one of them seems to write a finer line and run a bit drier than the other 3, and the piece that covers the pump seems to loosen regularly from the piece that holds the nib, so I am in the habit of tightening it as I use it. This may be entirely my fault, as I am not used to acrylic pens, and it may be that they need to be screwed together a bit more tightly than my others. Nonetheless, I am more than a little delighted to have found them, as I am reluctant to take my old friends into the field and risk losing or damaging them.

WRT the comment about cartridges: which ones work for you? I have known from the start that the pumps came out, but the end of the pump seems much larger than any of my converters or cartridges.

WRT the dry nib: how did you "spread the tines"? I might be willing to give that a try because the one that runs dry will only really write well with Private Reserve Chocolat of the many inks that I have tried in it.
