My Pelikan 1000 is wonderful. When I pull it out at the office to sign checks I feel the glamour, prestige and power. My staff is only mildly amused.

Goes to one's head more than a bit,,,,,,, doncha tink?:eureka:

You want big? I'll give you big? These are Giants, and as EDs, they are thirsty ones too.

Mikado (from raw ebonite to fancy urushi to maki-e), this one is Ishimei or stone finish:

I love this question! :)

My choices are:

(1) MB 149

(2) Pelikan M1000

(3) CS Churchill

(4) Delta Dolcevita Oversize

(5) Waterman Edson

(6) Sailor King of Pen

(7) Omas 360

(8) Dupont Olympio/Orpheo

(9) Visconti Opera Master

All of these are excellent oversize pens that you will enjoy using - I have them all! :D

I don't class the Visconti Van Gogh and the Parker Duofold Centennial as 'oversize'. These are merely medium-large, so let's not compare apples to oranges! True oversize pens are 6" long or more!

I would very much like a Nakaya Writer's Model.

Pending the financial discipline to save for one, I'm on the wait list and waiting (not very) patiently for a Densho. It's quite a bit bigger than I'm used to, so I hope I like it! And that I won't need both hands to use it. ;)

Isn't sanity really a one-trick pony, anyway? I mean, all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy . . . ooh hoo hoo hoo! . . . the sky's the limit!

.......it's big enough for me, and I don't think I really want anything bigger.

I can tell you're not female!

  • 5 years later...

I'd say either the Sheaffer PFM, or the Sheaffer NoNonsense (not in price, by any means, but it is definitely OVERSIZE--just like the School Pen)

These two were already mentioned but since I own them and love them, I will: MB 149 and Pelikan 1000. These are my go-to pens.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
