I think my favorite part is the little silver dome that covers the nib hole. That's an improvement over the Vanishing Point. Just too much money, though, I love Lamy but won't be getting one.

 

Wonder if they will make these in different colors eventually?

Wonderful review! Your pictures are amazing and the written review gives a nice presentation of the ink variation. I just got my Dialog 3 yesterday and I cannot put it down. The quality is evident just in picking it up. I hope Lamy will make this same pen in a black anodized finish.

The nib is exactly the same as my Studio Palladium. You say the weight of the Dialog does the nib justice. Did you try the Studio Palladium (not a lightweight pen in my view) and if so, how does it compare?

I'm a little bit a Lamy collector so I have all the studio's. The palladium is the best imo since the section isn't so slippery. The other studio's section are slippery and that doesn't benefit the nib as you are constantly adjusting your grip.

(By the way, the section on the studio platinum grey looks a little different then the one on the previous gold nibbed studio's, but it is still slippery.)

 

The D3 offers more grip, it isn't slippery at all, and thus allows you to get the optimal grip for you. The D3 is also heavier than the studio even, so the nib feels a bit softer. The palladium also isn't slippery but the D3 still allows more positions.

On the other hand, the D3 is thick everywhere so you must like that, the studio palladium offers a section that varies in width.

 

All in all, I think the studio palladium would be a better everyday writer for people with smallish hands.

Terrific review, sirksael. Your attention to detail is excellent--great photos, especially capturing the nib retraction. And it's interesting to see how the pen holds up left handed. I especially like your demonstration of nib performance under different pressures.

 

I'm convinced that I will own this pen some day... but not today. Maybe in a year or two.

This is probably the best pictorial review of this pen so far.I have almost made up my mind regarding ordering one online, after reading(seeing)this review. I just have these questions :

 

1. Does the finish on the body provide sufficient grip or is it slippery like most metal pens.It the finish matte ?

 

2. Is it possible to see the ink capacity in the converter, without taking it out of the nib unit. I see that while using a Catridge you can see the ink level without taking it out of nib unit.

 

3. Would anybody have any idea if it's possible to use a bigger converter (other than the Lamy converter) as there seems to be a lot of space in the lower section of this pen. I am specifically intereted to know if somebody has tried the Pilot CON-70 converter in this pen. If it works, it would be a great combination .

Great review on an interesting pen

 

I'm not entirely sure I get the whole 'vanishing point' thing but it certainly makes for an elegant looking pen in this case. Like a few others though, I think the price would need to drop a little before I would be seriously interested.

Would you or anybody else have the answers to my questions as above. I am particularly interested in knowing if the metal section is slippery and if anybody had a chance to try if Pilot Con 70 converter(best converter in world) fits this pen.

The D3 is matte finished and has the feel of a bead-blasted surface. The texture allows a good non-slip hold, or at least more slip resistant than a polished aluminum surface.

 

 

2. Is it possible to see the ink capacity in the converter, without taking it out of the nib unit. I see that while using a Catridge you can see the ink level without taking it out of nib unit.

 

Even if you take the nib unit out, you can't see the ink capacity with the converter. The knurled section covers the ink window of the converter. I am using Lamy compatible ink cartridges I bought in Germany for this pen (I refill the empties with a syringe if I want to experiment with different ink brands).

 

 

3. Would anybody have any idea if it's possible to use a bigger converter (other than the Lamy converter) as there seems to be a lot of space in the lower section of this pen. I am specifically intereted to know if somebody has tried the Pilot CON-70 converter in this pen. If it works, it would be a great combination .

 

The Namiki/Pilot converters have a much larger opening than the Lamy, I don't think they will fit.
