Hero Washable Blue (203)

I really like the color of this ink, I have a hard time telling it from Visconti Blue. I really wanted to like this ink, but the dry time is just too long.

Here's the review:

The Aurora may be in a pen that may be writing a bit too dry. I may need to tweek the nib on that one a bit.

And the BSB sample didn't come out well in the scan at all. Next to the Hero and Visconti, on paper, the BSB looks like it might have a purple cast. I don't find it that much more intense than the Visconti.

I noticed with the Hero blue that the wetter nibs have a very long dry time. My Vacumatic, my Danitrios, and my Parker 51 are all fairly wet, and take quite a while to dry, but my Sailor 1911 is fairly dry, and it dries a lot more quickly. It also looks like a different color, because it is so dry.At least on my Gibson C.R. Markings journals.

it looks like a really deep and beautiful blue, if only it dried faster, good review

And here are some water tests. The Hero did OK. The Aurora may have been from a pen with some flow issues, so don't take this as gospel. But if you want to make sure the address of your letter stays in great shape even if it gets dropped in a puddle, it looks the the Baystate Blue is the way to go.

For addressing mail, I use Kung te Cheng, in a Preppy supplied by Noodler's. Since I got a scanner today, maybe later I'll try it out on an ink test.

This is currently my favourite daily use ink together with the older Parker "Super Quink" Blue Black. Doesn't really feel that dry to me, at least when compared to Pelikan inks. A really nice darkish blue suitable for work. I agree that it's rather slow-drying, definitely the slowest among my inks (I only have Waterman, Parker and Pelikan inks).

Very cheap here, about USD0.50 per bottle, that is, if you can find one. Hero Blue Black is far more common.

This Hero Blue looks amazing. It jumps off my monitor. I got to visit my local Chinese bookstore for this ink next time.

Some people think BSB is THE blue, IMHO this and Visconti is THE blue. As far as it being dry, I know it's subjective, but in the same pen, the Visconti seem to give the pen a little bit more of a 'fluid' feel; not much different, just a teeny bit.

I must admit that this ink does feel a little dry. I noticed that when used in pens that lay down nice, wet lines, it does not feel as "lubricating" as other inks. Quite odd indeed.

The person who last sold me Hero Washable Blue did warn me that the ink may clog pens due to the large amount of sediment in it. I'm not sure how true this is but the ink does appear to be quite saturated to me. Drying time can also be a pain as I'm now realising, definitely not the best ink for left-handed people.

Anyone know of a place to get this ink in Massachusetts?

  • 2 years later...

I am visiting Macau & China and just pickup up 4 bottles, for 10 Rembimi (about $1.65). What a deal!! I used up my last bottle, have a couple pens I like to use this in. Now, I just wonder if i should have gotten more, I don't intend to come back here again.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
