A few Japanese "BIG" nibs

Recommended Posts

Just trying to learn about lighting and avoiding unwanted glares on nibs I used a photo comparing a few big nibs. I used as comparison "base" the well known Pelikan 1000, and joined it to the trio formed by Sailor KOP, Danitrio Mikado and Namiki Emperor. Results are quite obvious on the side of the Emperor, followed by Mikado and then closely by M1000 and KOP, being the differences more on the shape than on the size itself. Using them is another different matter. Bock's Danitrio, and Japanese KOP and Emperor are flawless nibs. They behave well above both M1000's that I have. Technically, I used a Nikon D200 with an old 105 micro on tripod, 1sec f13 manual exposure at iso 100 and light tent with two white light sources. No bouncing surfaces (hence the shadows and pen reflections between nibs. Just adjusting the source angles and positions the glare was avoided this time... This is a tough learning curve, and Lisa does not share her hidden secrets... she is a "Light-use" Guru... he he...

BTW, the ink drops (Jentle BB) on the KOP nib are an her honor... hi hi hi...

It's hard to imagine what a nib would need to do to perform better than a M1000. The M1000 has been in a class it itself among the pens I own with it's flexibility and clean lines. But, now that you've planted the seed, I'll have to look for opportunities to write with some of these nibs to find out.

I'll likely never own any of the other pens in your line up. While my sticker shock-limit has increased dramatically from when I began collecting pens, I'm still not ready to shell out more than $300 for a single pen. Fortunately, I was able to locate a used 1000 for less than that. Still, it would be fun to know what the best of the best feel like to write with. Thanks for the post.

Your photos never fail to impress everytime :) The Danitrio Mikado and Namiki Emperor are now in my WANT list.

Got today my "dirty" fingers onto a D700 ... let's see what comes out. It has very nice macro features, and combined with the 105 micro it will do nice things. Sure. Just did some trials with extension tubes on a fly wing and it was spectacular... First intended work will be with Stewart's pen wraps... I'm warning you!!!

Patientype... I got my M1000 due to good experiences with some M800's but it has been dissapointing to me. It is not normal to have TWO consecutive nibs behaving bad to very bad, but I know that there are several 1000's doing an excellent work. Bad luck for me! About prices, you may find several Sailors within your range, and why not, you may be able to go further by asking Kevin for a layaway plan. Danis are perhaps the best price to quality relation around. They have German Bock nibs that behave really well... Not pushing you... just giving some useful info.

Chris, Sinchan, Siv, Ralfstc... thanks a lot for your positive feedback. This photo suffers from quite a few problems... must keep experimenting and results will come sooner or later... ha ha...

You'll have to bring some of these wonderous nibs to the Pen Posse. Then I can try them on your dime. AND, I'll bring my Pelikan 1000 so you can see if my nib does any better than the one's you've used so far.

It doesn't take much of a push to get me thinking about another pen. But, there are just too many attractive fountain pens. Many more than I can afford. I'm still doing penance for purchasing a Pilot 823 a couple of weeks back. The climate where I live wouldn't be favorable to another pricey Japanese package coming in the mail. I'd forcast icy hail and blustery winds.

Ha ha ha...

I wish I could attend a Pen Posse to share a well desired time with some of you, other-crazy-pen-addicts!!! but that would mean to catch a couple of planes or three, fly across the pond... and all that very costly stuff. Not easy at all. We all have to follow some good advices given here... we have to TAKE IT EASY ... give it time, and by this ehaviour we will end up with the pens we really love without paying any personal price!! Everyone at his own pace... (It has NOT to be fast in any way)

This is not a big nib. It is normal sized, but its behaviour is almost the same as a big nib. Those flex nibs by Danitrio are a very nice experience indeed. I'm hooked... and you?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
