the Lamy 2000

Hi all,

heres my review to the toughest of the tough, the lamy 2000!!

I. appearance and design 9/10

this pen is very easy on the eyes. nothing fancy here, just some matte black makralon and some stainless steel trim. if the pen you really want is loaded with stuff from the bling factor, then you don not want to go near this pen, because the only parts of it that are shiny is the end of the cap and the little nub of the nib that you see poking through the section.

II. construction and quality 10/10!!

this pen is the sturdiest pen that i have and i have ever seen and have. this pen is amazingly strong and is built to last, and the proof is that there are still pens floating around from '66 that are in perfect condition. the quality of this pen is outstanding, and everything fits together perfectly, and if there was anything wrong with it, it is backed by lamy amazing customer service, and their great warranty.

III. weight and dimensions 7/10

this pen weighs almost nothing compared to all of my other pens. it weighs about half of my visconti van gogh, and a tad less than my lamy accent brilliant. it is also very thin at the section, which i dont mind, because i tend to hold my pens up high, because it feels more comfortable and it makes my handwriting look better.

IV. nib and performance 10/10

the nib on this pen is amazingly smooth and lays down a nice crisp, wet line that looks more like a BB nib, which i have yet to try. i dont think that this would be a very good pen for me to take to school because the line is so wet, but i may get one with a fine nib just for that, because i could really use the huge ink capacity for school, i need it! there is also no marking on the nib, so you have to keep record of it just in case.

V. filling system and maintenance 9/10

i love the filling system on this thing, it would be perfect for school because it holds so much ink. i went over a week without filling this thing, and that was with long, daily journal entries. my one complaint bout this is how stiff the piston is, but it seems to have loosened up a bit since i got it. this pen is also really easy to clean, all you have to do is repeatedly fill it up with water until the water comes out clear, then just dry and store it!

VI. cost to value 10/10

there is no question about it, this is a great price for a sturdy, quality piston filling pen, especially one that writes so smooth right out of the box.

conclusion

this is a great pen, and i encourage all who dont have one to get one! you wont be disappointed. even if you dont want one just to get another pen, i still encourage you to get one, because i didnt want one at first, but when i got it, i knew i made the right choice.

Great review Sal. Currently my favorite pen. For those reading, if you're looking to upgrade from a cheap pen to your first "nicer" pen, then you can't go wrong here. The quality is just as described above, precise. The nib is wonderful. The styling is sophisticated yet simple.

Two quick questions: 1) Is that a B nib or a BB nib? 2) Do the Lamy B nibs demonstrate any stubbish characteristics like Montblanc B nibs do?

That settles it then. I need another Lamy 2000. My XF needs a stubby friend. (BTW my XF writes sort of like an Arabic nib :D )

Nice review. Outstanding pictures. I agree that the value is great for the 2000- it offers the features and writing experience of much more expensive pens for less than $100. In many cases (but not all), choosing a factory-made pen more expensive than this one simply improves the aesthetics rather than performance.

Great review and your handwriting is really nice.

Hi,

@Mrsal:

Its Makrolon from Bayer

AKA polycarbonate with a fancy name, a la Lexan. It's not quite as extra special as they'd like us to believe!

Nice review and pics - I just received mine this week! I'm very happy with it, and filled it up with some Noodler's Lexington Grey. Mine's an XF and is still slightly wider than the F Pilot VP I also received, but it wonderfully smooth. I was impressed with the fit & finish of the pen.

I heartily recommend buying from Todd at isellpens, he's great to work with - excellent customer service!

I think it is a pretty special material!

But, helas, you're right: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polycarbonate it's just like Lexan!

Btw: nice review of a great classic I love, thank you!

ehh, all i care about is that it is made out of a nice, strong material that feels good to the touch.

I have been told by somewhat of a Lamy expert, who I believe actually has an association with Lamy, that the Makrolon that the 2000 is made of becomes quite brittle after so many years. I was told that vintage 2000s develop cracks in the nipple, and leaks can occur. I am somewhat skeptical of the longevity of the plastic when compared to other options. Of course, the lifetime warranty sort of makes up for that, huh?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
