Noodler's Burma Road Brown

This is a review of Noodler's Burma Road Brown ink.

Burma Road Brown is a medium brown with a slight yellow tone. (I've matched the images in this review as closely as I can to the original pages, but there are too many variables to assure that you'll see the same colors as I do.)

There is a small amount of feathering on the paper in this Moleskine journal.

I used this ink exclusively at work last week. During the week I used it in six different pens, and found it to be very well behaved in all of them. This is an ink that "just works" for me.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Be well.

Dave

Thanks for the review. This looks like a wonderful brown. Great label on the bottle, too.

Just for fun I did a bit of "kitchen chromatography" with this ink. Here's the result:

That's a good idea. Where's the yellow, though? On my scanner it appears that this is a very dark brown.

Have you any idea how it compares with Walnut Brown or Waterman's Havana?

Burma Road Brown is very nice brown/oliver green. On the paper, I find it is very easy to my eye. Great ink with good flow properties.

I'm sorry to say that I don't have either of those inks, so I don't know how Burma Road Brown compares to them.

As to the yellow: When I look at this ink, I see a brown with a yellow tint to it. Others have noted a green tint. I looked at the ink under various lights, from bright sunlight to the dim CFLs in my home office, and it looked like it had a yellow tint to me. That doesn't mean that I'm right or that others are wrong...I'm just reporting what I see with my eyes.

Near the top of the color separation, where the color is lightest, it looks yellowish-green when I look at it in my office, and greenish-yellow under bright lights. It's really not possible to judge what the ink looks like on paper based on a separation, though. There's a lot of violet in that separation, and absolutely no hint of violet in the writing done with the ink.

Thats a great brown. I love the label on the bottle. Do I need another brown....I have 4 inks already in the brown family. :hmm1:

I'm having trouble finding it from the usual sources, any suggestions?

Yep,now I can see the yellow at the lighter (top) part of the separation! :glare: As I said, good idea that 'kitchen chromatography'.

I'll have to get a bottle and try it out which should be easier (and cheaper) than changing to a colour corrected monitor.

Thanks for the review and reply.

Interesting ink. It reminds me of El' Lawrence with more brown thrown in. I love El' Lawrence so I may have to try this as well.

Agreed that it looks like El Lawrence. I tossed in the towel on El Lawrence a while back (too many issues for me), so I am looking forward to trying this (from Dave's review, it seems to be a well-behaved ink).

Even by noon on Saturday, I was told that they had already sold out that color.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
