Pelikan Golf Limited Edition (2946/4500)

In 1996 Pelikan introduced the Golf. It is an limited edition fountainpen, based on the pelikan souverän m800, dedicated to the game golf. They made 4500 fountain pens in total. 2500 sold seperatly, and 2000 in a set with matching balpen.

I only knew it from internet pictures, and I did not really like it. However, some time ago I saw a new old stock (NOS) lying in a penshop. I really liked the color of it. So ended up visiting the shop again and buying it.

______________________________________________________________________

1- First Impressions (7/10)

Like I said before. I did not like it when I looked at it on the internet, but loved it when I saw one in person. This is mainly because of the colour. It is an dark green colour with is hard to photograph. Making it look like a black, or maybe dirty green, pen. In real life the colour is really elegant and matching the name “Golf”.

2- Appearance & Design (8/10)

I think the Golf is the least expensive pelikan limited edition and the most simple one. The only special thing about it is the two clubs with golfbal at the barrel and the different colour. The base of the pen is the old model m800. Different top and bottom compared to the latest m800.

Because the combination of gold trim/ logo with the green colour, it has an classical, elegant look. The golfclub and ball at the barral are made of sterling silver with a 14K gold layer over it.

The pen is delivered in a special box with tee’s and a golfbal. Also a personal service card is provided with the pen showing its unique number. This number (2946/4500 in my case) is also engraved at the top of the clip. See my avanter and the pictures below.

3- Weight & Dimensions (9/10)

Like the m800 its based on, the Golf has an brass piston mechanism, giving it the same balans as the other m800‘s. Compared to my other pelikans (m200 - m600) its more heavy at the back. Therefore I don’t post the cap, like I did with the m600 with does not have a brass mechanism.

Overall it is nicely balansed and a nice size.

Nib & Performance (9/10)

What can I say, Its a Pelikan. The nib is a 18K duotone nib. Mine is a fine. Like my other m800 nib it writes really smooth but not that flexable. My other pelikan fine nibs write a bit wide. But this one feels like a real fine.

Unfortually the nib writes a bit scratchy when used up side down. I use them mostly for drawing (architectual student) and when used up side down, you will have a nice thinner line. Ideal when making small drawings.

I don’t take this fact into the score because I have another m800 (and other pelikans) who don’t have this issue and write nicely up side down.

4- Filling System (10/10)

Like all pelikan souverän pens, the Golf uses a piston filler. The mechanism is made of solid brass making it more durable than the plastic one in my m600, m400 and m200‘s. Turning the knob is going really smooth. But this is the case with all pelikans. Like the m800 it holds enough ink for a long time writing. I don’t know how many pages you can write with a full pen, because I fill the pen often.

5- Cost & Value (7/10)

It is hard to say if the Cost are to high, or just right. I paid 499 euro for mine. For a pelikan LE I find that a good price. However, for 375 euro you will have a m800 with the same nib, and body. So is the gold club, the green colour, and the fact that its a limited edition worth paying an extra 125 euro?? For me it was.

6- Conclusion (Final score 8/10)

If you like the colour and logo, and if you can find them, the A team, I mean the Golf is a nice alternative for a normal m800. For relative low costs you will have a limited edition pen with you can use every day. You don’t need to be a golfer to like this pen.

Hello,

great review, thank you. I like your clear layout...

The pen looks worthy and I like the Pelikan logo application from brass here - I really don't like

the printed logo ...

The color in combination with gold really looks elegant and I like green pens.

Not fond of Golf at all, it doesn't appeal to me. Could enjoy a soccer pen more... :bunny01:

The "Hunting" LE also had the green/gold combination with Toledo overlay, if I recall right.

I would have paid the price for that one

But it's only a matter of taste - the pen itself looks great.

Best regards,

Anna

Thanks Anna.

I know what you mean, golf isn't my favourite sport also, would like a tennis pen myself. Maybe 4 in the colours of the grand slams..

The hunting pen is great looking, but out of my reach. And I would not know someone selling one.

I thought the overlay was silver with the hunting?

O yes, Robert, you are right - but the better I like it... :D

I once saw the "Hunting" at ebay for a ridiculous price - my limit was too low...

Thanks for this, you don't hear much about this pen. Interesting, but golf is not for me. Now a Baseball Pelikan :hmm1:, now we're talking. :D

But a good review otherwise. Thanks again.

Definitely use that one to keep score. :)

Nice photography and details, Robert! This is your first review, isn't it?

Another nice pen indeed... pity for the nib. I have an M800 OS which is part of the first batch. It has a wonderful 14kt nib which has the same flex of the current M1000 nib.

Pity that Pelikan dropped the sport LE theme: I'd love to see a Football M800!

Thanks for the review.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
