TGW - The Ghost Writer reviews his Nakaya...

horolographer

Recommended Posts

Here is my Nakaya Writer in Orangey-Red Urushi on a double Broad nib - with dark red (closer to burgundy actually) ink to match. Its been with me less than a month and enjoying it tremendously. I have to admit that it was this pen that brought me back to Fountains.

Oddly enough, the colour is more accurate in the photo that in the scan below...

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Great review, Harry. So, how did you accomplish the picture of the pen suspended?

Ah, that fresh ink on paper look!

Thanks Doug! Appreciate the compliment :-)

Most welcome Georges. I enjoyed doing it. My first review. Hopefully there will be not too many more, I cannot afford buying too many pens! :-(

Thanks very much. I do not know about the handwriting though, I think I am out of practice....

Its THE GHOST who held it up when I photographed it!

And what ink is that? Nice color, very nice shading (in photo, not so visible in scan)

Believe it or not, its Pelikan Red. I found it much too light and I darkened it with Pelikan black. I did it very slowly and kept testing it untill it got dark enough for my taste. I approximate 4 or 5:1. I know its not very scientific but I felt thats the best way for me personally. I did the same for Waterman Green - too light and darken it with black ink.

:-)

I am SO glad to hear you like the pen, especially the nib. I have been drooling over these pens all morning and then this review appears. :puddle:

I do the same thing with my inks. I mix black in because I like the "colour" to be an intimation of colour. Kind of like the way I like women to wear perfume: you have to hug them or be really close to smell it. That ink mixture is fantastic. The closest I've come to an acceptable "red" right out of the bottle is the Swish Mix Red-Black.

I won't ask you to tell me how much you paid for it, but I would appreciate knowing where you purchased it. I've only seen them on Nibs.com.

Thanks for the terrific review, pix, everything. Happy Nakaya-ing.

Phone calls last just minutes, emails get deleted, but letters live forever.

This makes me want a Writer in Kikyo very badly, which is quite a feat, as I've never been particularly attracted to Nakaya. Beautiful photo (and handwriting). Best,

Great ink colors! I like your green very much too. I did the same mixing procedure with my Quinks, but have to say: yours look much better :notworthy1: . Great review too.

I am glad to know that its kosher amongst FP users to mix our inks. :-)

It was a Sunday afternoon spent on nothing but darkening of my colour inks (Red and Brown Pelikan and Green Waterman). I found it very involving and childishly fun because I was getting all my hands inked and excited at getting a tone of colour I can call my own.

I end up buying Urushi colours to match my favourite ink colours. The Nakaya Orange-Red is with Red Ink, the Danitrio Beige is filled with Brown Sepia like ink (which I will review next week - I hope!) and my much loved Orange Dufold with Ya-Yuke Orange (unmixed). Even my Green Pelikan M1000 Soveran is filled with Green ink (which I mixed).

[Check out images of my Danitrio here - https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...howtopic=109090 ]

I purchased it from a trusted reseller called Aesthetic Bay in Singapore. He allowed me to try various nibs before I bought. I paid much the same price as I would have paid if I bought from the website direct. As it was my first Nakaya - I wanted to have a feel of the pen in person before committing. I am in a dangerous position now - as I see a Tamenuri calling out to me.... aaarrrgghhh.....got to fight temptation.

Thanks David. Honestly, I was not impressed with the pen the first time I saw it. Then I saw this orangey-red urushi being used by another academician friend from another university. We are good friends and he shared with me all the aspects of the pen. As I used his pen, it grew on me very quickly. I has a different feel from mainstream pens like Parker or MB etc. As my first Japanese pen, what struck me was that it felt organic even. No metals on the barrel or body save for the clip (I kind of regret having the clip as I would prefer the cigar - clipless). The roundness reminded me of small eggs. Its so light for it size and straight away I knew I could use the pen for hours without tiring.

Now as an owner of both Danitrio and Nakaya pens, I find that the Nakaya is a clear grade better made although a tad more expensive.

Thanks O!

I shall try to write a short review in my M1000 pen with the ink. Hopefully it will not disappoint you when its up! :-)

Give me some time though!

Great photo, Harry! :D I like that Ghost Writer effect... Did you take two photos and blend them together? ;)

Beautiful coloration. Although I'm more partial to the Kuro-Tamenuri, the Aka-Tamenuri is quite attractive. I wonder how it will fare over time (meaning, if there will be much fading at the edging).

Very original to write the review as "it should for this forum": HANDWRITTEN WITH A FOUNTAIN PEN! ;) Do you do photography for a living? They are very professional.

The pen is gorgeous and was one that I was also "eyeing" but decided for the Aka-Tamenuri. Great pen!

Thanks very much Sonia for the comments.

I am an avid photographer. Mostly still life and product. I license them to magazines. I have a professional life in another field though. :-)

I am seriously considering a second Nakaya possibly a Aka Tamenuri!

Not as professional as yours (though I also love photography). This is the "jewel of my crown" next to my Wakasa-nuri, an Aka-Tamenuri.

Hi Andy

I do not carry my pens in my shirt pocket (they are carried in leather pen carriers). The only time I would carry a pen on my body is when I do not carry a bag - then it would only be a roller ball pen in my trouser pocket.

I carry the pen based on what I expect to do for the day. Whether its a meeting, research, note taking, scribbling, writing memos or just signing documents. So I let what I write dictate what I carry.

It is amazing how often I get same questions like what belt/shoe I match with my watch as well. I do not wear any particular thing to match stuff. In fact, I do not make any effort to match anything. Maybe its fashion faux pas but I find it silly and vain.

Lastly - which is the honest truth - 95% of the watches I photograph do not belong to me. Wish they were mine though!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
