Quick Look at Noodler's Baystate Blue

This is a very quick look at the new Noodler's Baystate Blue that was mentioned in Marketplace last week. It looked interesting so I couldn't resist ordering a bottle. A few members were asking for someone to post their impressions, so here's mine. I'm sorry it's not a complete review, but just don't have the time now. But I hope this quick side-by-side helps.

Both samples were written with a Pelikan M805 with fine nib. The paper is not of the best quality and shows some feathering on this cheap paper. On a hard smooth paper such as HP 32lb, both inks have very sharp lines with little feathering.

Looks very nice, indeed. I'll have to see it in person, but it seems like it could be the waterproof blue that I've been looking for.

These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value.--Thomas Paine, "The American Crisis", 1776

This bodes well, indeed. Thanks for the quick review! My Baystate Blue should arrive tomorrow.

Can you verify its water-resistance?

I'm shocked by how much darker the DC looks than Bay State. This is the regular DC and not DC electric, right?

This ink is one I'm going to have to put on my list.

That is a very nice blue. Now I'll have to get the DC supershow to know just how blue the Noodler's is. Unfortunately my local Noodler's dealer doesn't have any of the newer inks, and I doubt they'll have this either anytime soon. :crybaby:

Looking to exchange ink samples! Available: Noodler's Bulletproof Black, Noodler's 54th Massachusetts, Noodler's Black Swan in English Roses, Noodler's Bad Belted Kingfisher, Noodler's Operation Overlord Orange

Is the Baystate Blue a Swisher Exclusive?

Looks very very nice.

To my eyes it looks like Visconti blue almost.

Does anyone know if this Ink (Baystate) is bulletproof?

I have not verified the waterproof claim. It was in the description in the link that was pointed to in the Marketplace last week (Luxury Brands) as "...waterproof when dry".

Actually I just stepped out and ran some water over a sample I wrote last night. Water alone, will not run at all. When rubbed with wet finger there is very slight blue cast on surrounding paper, yet no smear of the writing itself. Bottom line - will not smear when wet.

I figured as much, but I wanted to be sure.

This appears to be as big a difference as when I compare my DC to my Midnight Blues side by side. This new ink of Noodler's must be quite vibrant and bright.

Bah sorry I didn't mean feathering I meant nib creep.

Any nib creep with this ink?

You beat me to it! I just recently received this ink myself and it quickly became my favorite ink. It looks so much better in person too. I love writing in it now. (No offense to the picture taking at all either) I'll probably be purchasing another bottle soon just to have it in reserve.

My scan is perhaps a touch overexposed making the whole page a little lighter. Comparing it to my original, the original is even more saturated and intense.

For whoever asked, there is no nib creep on my M805 fine.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
