How about the Aspen Balance?

I am planning on reviewing this pen later this week, so I just happen to have some pics ready!

That Balance Aspen Edition is one pretty pen and one of my favourite modern Sheaffers.

Funny... my favourite vintage pen is also a Balance.

Another favourite pen is the modern Crest as it's a well balanced, beautifully finished, and fitted with an excellent modern Triumph nib.

well, shoot. I got mixed up thinking this was the vintage thread.

so - took all that nonsense out.

Modern? Just don't know because I've had no exposure to them

Modern Sheaffer? Prelude of course! Nice size & weight, uses a cart. or converter. Smooth nib. Nice looks, snap-on cap. I have a black one that I use a lot. :)

I should probably also ask you what your favorite Wearever is! I have an early gray marbled Pennant complete with imprints and gold plated "overfeed" that is one cool pen!

Kendall,

I have the complete Aspen Balance set. It's my favorite color in the Balance II.

I've been using the rollerball the last several days. What a nice pen!

That Aspen Balance is a truly beautiful pen and capturing it's beauty with a camera is nearly impossible... it is a pen one has to see in person to really appreciate.

I've had a few and they have neber failed to elicit oooh's and aaah's from anyone who has seen them.

Hmmmm.....Well, I guess my favourite modern Sheaffer is the Special Edition "Holly" pen from 1996 (which I own); it's basically a red Imperial with a fancy holly cap design. The 1997 "Snowflake" special edition I also own is a Prelude, but I prefer the Imperial's inlaid nib....

Runner-up would have to be the Balance II in crimson; I have one in cobalt, but the crimson would be my first choice (I couldn't find one at a good price at the time, so I opted for cobalt).

The modern Sheaffer I would love to own is an original Sheaffer Legacy fountain pen....

Well, I just happend to get Photoshop for Christmas, and I've been learning enough about the program so that I tried it on my Balance pic. This comes the closest I've seen to capturing the marbling color.

I started my (new and growing) love of pens (Sheaffer only, for just now) when I saw the Chrome/Palladium Intrigue (I now have the whole set). Of pens I don't yet own, I guess the Copper Legacy II and the Sterling Silver Legacy Heritage are the sweetest.

Just waiting for eBay to throw a couple of those my way ...

Hi all

My favorite modern Sheaffer has to be my millennium balance set. I love the play of colors between the black, blue and pearlesent violet. Sort of reminds me of a black opal. Now if they had only left off that !#$%^ gold trim ring at the end of the section next to the nib. Darn thing corroded and I had to get another just in case I ever wanted to sell it--which isn't too likely.

Too bad the question didn't go back a bit farther timewise. Sheaffer had a magnificient pen in the Targa.

My favorite modern Sheaffer pen is definatly the Sheaffer Legacy I with the Barleycorn Sterling Silver finish.

No worries about chipped of laquer or split plastic on solid Silver :-); I have one with a "F" nib which performs very well.

  • 1 year later...

I have also an B2 Aspen, which is indeed a beautiful pen. But my favorite modern Sheaffer pen is the Sheaffer Crest Opalite marine-green with medium nib. Until now the barrel of this pen is the most striking celluloid I have seen. Deep green with turquoise undertones. And the handwork (is it handwork?) irregularity of the barrel adds to the beauty.

Also the Crest is a joy to write with. No flex, stiff as a nail, but super smooth.

Enjoy,

/:) Hans.

The only modern Sheaffer we have is a Prelude that my wife found on clearance at OfficeMax. Price was $20 less another $10 coupon for a total cost of $10. Not bad for a very nice writing pen.

My favorite would be the Targa Moire from 1998. Dazzling in the sunlight!

If I actually HAD the Targa Moire :bonk: , it would be my favorite (that finish totally rocks!)

That said, while there are so many I really love (the Aspen Balance, sterling Crest), my favorite is the Legacy II with the smooth Palladium cap and the ribbed matte black finish. It just looks SO cool, and like nothing else, especially with that Pd-plated Touchdown knob. Wicked.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
