My Lamy 2000 cracked!

MacTech

Recommended Posts

I was inspecting my Lamy 2000 when I noticed a disturbing sight, a distinct hairline crack right above the left "ear" of the spring clip, I keep this pen in a pen case when not in use, stored upright, I do all the right things, and yet, it cracked

oh well, time to see if the Lamy warranty is all it's cracked (no pun intended) up to be....

Maybe I should keep an eye out for a Rotring 600 EF, nothing short of a thermonuclear detonation could kill it

What's the average turnaround time for repairs? and is it better to send it to Filofax (I'm in the U.S.) or should it go all the way home to Germany?

Dude, that is terrible!

Since you are in the states i would send it to Filofax and let them do the rest, hope you get a new one back soon!

If you go onto their website select appropriate section you will get a response from Germany

I asked whether they would be able to send a new clip for a Lamy Studio last Saturday evening today I had reply they will forward a new top complete & at no charge.

I think that kind of service deserves as much credit & recommendation I can give. I don't know how long it will take of course but I'll be happy to wait.

Full marks to Lamy for old fashioned customer care.

Even happier that I ordered a few other Lamy products earlier today & before their e mail arrived

The good news is that Lamy USA has an excellent repair facility and a pretty competent repair guy. I've sent two pens for repair and received great service. One of the pens was a 2000 that needed a new section because of stripped threads. The repair was completed and tested to satisfaction with no problems.

I am sure you will receive the same good treatment.

  • 2 weeks later...

Luckilly, the Filofax repair facility is only 3 hours away from me (yes, I Google-Maps'ed it...), I sent off the package via Fedex Ground yesterday, and it's already on the truck to be delivered today, the box is *heavilly* overpacked, so no matter how rough shippers are, they can't damage the pens any more than they already are...

yes, pen*S*, a few days ago, I dropped my Lamy Al-Star and it split right at the junction between the cap and body, then again, I didn't exactly baby the Al-Star, it was treated like a true user pen, carried loose in pocket with keys and my Fenix L1T 2.0 flashlight, it showed no signs of failure up until it's little episode of Gravitational Challenge

so far, the only pens to survive my use unscathed are;

Waterman Kultur, carried loose in pocket just like the Al-Star, but has been rock solid

Fisher Bullet (black matte), carried in my LR pocket, and sat on for most of the day, no failures

Rotring 600 RB, not much can kill this solid chunk of brass, I need to find a EF R600 FP for daily use, the R600RB has passed all tests with flying colors

I'm not expecting the Al-Star to be covered under warranty, as I *DID* abuse it, but the 2000 should be covered, as it was treated well and babied

That IS rather odd... the Makrolon is a very strong material. It should never just crack on its own. Unless... by some chance there was a manufacturing defect (maybe some air bubbles inside the wall?). In any case, good choice on sending it off to Filofax. Bob Nurin, the Lamy specialist there, should take good care of you. I've heard of many good experiences with his service. Technically, the pen is warranted for a limited time, but they seem to honor it almost like a lifetime warranty (though with a very obviously abused pen I'd doubt you'd get it done for free). Good luck and I hope you get your pen back in 100% order. :)

I had a similar thought, though I suppose it is possible to damage virtually any threaded material with enough overtightening, which presumably could have happened at the factory.

Just recieved them back today, both covered under warranty, the 2000 had a new front section, ink feed and gaskets installed, and was partially filled with Lamy Black ink (which is a really nice, dark black ink, btw, I look forward to adding it to my torture tests <evil grin>)

the Al Star had a new nib unit and converter installed, the old battle-scarred body with it's "character marks" was not replaced, neither was the cap, the Al-Star was not filled

Great service from Filofax and Lamy :)

  • 1 year later...

Gotta add my experience. The section cracked. I sent it off with a small handwritten note, a check for $7.50 and got it back 2 weeks to the day. Impressive ;)

Straight to Filofax. I sat in mine and cracked it in many places, and they fixed it right up and sent it back for me, (and my f nib mysteriously became very stubbish {good thing}). It took 2 weeks.

Send it back to Lamy in Germany. We have worked with Lamy for about twenty years now and know they provide great customer service. Maybe a couple of weeks but not much more for repairs.

About a year ago, I bought a new Lamy CP-1 Platinum ball pen. I took it with me on vacation that year and no sooner than I got to Charleston,SC--our vacation destinaton, I dropped the pen on the sidewalk from a pretty good distance--it bent the plunger on the top and caved in the cap. I wes devastated--the pen was only 1 week old! When I got home I took it to the AD and explained what happened--I was truthful and asked if they could send it to Lamy for repairs with the understanding that I would pay for the repairs. I went ahead and purchaced a replacement--I was skeptical that it could be repaired. About 2 weeks later I got a call saying my pen was back. I picked up a brand new replacement pen at no charge! So now I have 2 CP-1's! Now that's great service!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
