Rubinato Inchiostro Blu

Hi all,

I'm very new to the world of ink reviews, but given there has been no review of this ink, I thought I'd give it a shot.

The ink is Francesco Rubinato Inchiostro Blu, which basically translates as "Blue Ink". Some background behind how this ink came into my possession: this ink was a gift from a travelling sibling who found it in a tiny stationary store in Istanbul and thought it would be a perfect present for me (she was right!). It's actually an Italian company that produces both calligraphy and fountain pen ink.

Now due to language barriers, and the fact that my sister isn't a fountain pen user herself, we didn't actually know for certain whether this ink was fountain pen safe. However, I've been using this ink in a bug-ugly promotional Renault eyedropper from the nineties for the past month, including one week where I let the ink sit in the pen for seven days without using it. The Renault pen is still showing no signs of distress, and I'm now comfortable enough to use this ink in my Safari.

So please feel free to check out my review using the link below. It's quite a pretty blue ink - I think it's the colour of forget-me-nots. It doesn't lean towards green at all, which is exactly what I was looking for. If it weren't for the dryness and the fact that I'm not 100% sure that it's a fountain pen ink, I'd be using it daily in all my pens.

Also, given that Rubinato seems to be a fairly uncommon brand of ink, I've also attached a picture of the bottle for your viewing pleasure.

Very nice review. I think you covered all the bases well. Thanks.

On a side note, this color is a little too light for my taste. But it looks like a well behaved ink.

Fool me once, shame on you.

Fool me twice; damn

There goes that fox again.

Thank you. Rubinato inks were recommended to me and I have yet to purchase a bottle.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Hi all,

Just to quickly update on this ink. After another month of using this ink exclusively in my Safari, there has been no clogging. I'm now confident in saying that this ink is fountain pen safe.

It's quite nice out here in the sunshine...

Here in Knoxville we have a curio type shop named Emory's 5 & 10.

Truly is a Five and Dime from bygone days.

They have a large selection of Rubinatos.

I have written with the Black, (normal)Blue and Turquoise.

I like the viscosicty and the flow regardless of which of my pens I use it in.

In cleaning pens however, it tends to linger longer than, say the Visconti.

A close neck and neck with my Organic Ink selections.

And please tell us more about this store. I want to acquire a Rubinato ink or two.

I know where you are talking about. I too live in Knoxville and will have to stop in. It has been awhile since I have been there. Thanks for the info.

The only places I knew of that carried bottle inks in town was Mori Luggage in West Town Mall (Mont Blanc and Parker - Mori in Asheville has Lamy as well so they may be able to order it), Staples (Parker) and Hobby Lobby (Manuscript - it is in a bottle like Pelikan 4001 and reminds me of Pelikan Brilliant Blue...maybe it is Pelikan that is bottled for the company in the UK? http://www.calligraphy.co.uk/shop/calligraphy/fountain-pen-ink/assorted-fountain-pen-ink-30ml-bottle.html priced @ $5.99). Nice to hear about another source.

Thank you,

I've tried getting them from the store in Italy. Can you imagine, they don't speak English, Spanglish or 3rd grade German? (lol). We need an importer.

I just buy -- and/or order from my store -- any Rubinato things I need and/or want. Even if their site is not up to date. Many Rubinato things exist, which are not to be seen in their site, and vice versa.

Unfortunately a problem not only for us but also one of theirs.....................

All in all, I am absolutely sure that such a company does not have their "own" real inks, but that their inks are re-issuses from somewhere else. Until today, I have no proof, and am also not interested in gaining same....

Mike, what store do you know of that sells them? I haven't found a US supplier.

Thank you. Alas the ink is super pricey and they only have the black and sepia. I'll keep looking on that website though, so thank you.

I don't suppose you are making any field trips to Italy for ink any time soon?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
