Pilot G2 Limited Gel Rollerball Pen

Back in 2007 I had the chance to write with Pilot G2 roller ball pen and I felt in love with their refill, so smooth and cool colours. But I didn’t like the plastic body, felt cheap and light depicted the good grip on the rubber barrel. But a week ago I found the Pilot G2 made from metal in attractive colours. After couples of review from different websites I bought the grey version called “Anthracite”.

1.Appearance & Design (9/10)

You love it or you hate it! The same Pilot G2 but in metal, cool and attractive design, with a feeling of premium version. It came in a strange design plastic box.

2.Construction & Quality (8/10)

Very well build, good quality materials, but I didn’t like the slightly movement of the barrel…The metal body has matt finish colours with matching rubber grip, with strong polished pocket clip.

3.Weight & Dimension (9/10)

It is made from metal; it is heavy about 25 grams. It is long around 15 cm and 1,3 cm on the widest grip point.

4.Nib & Performance (10/10)

What can I say? It is number 1 selling pen in America. One of the best refills ever!

5.Filling system & Maintenance (8/10)

Easy to operate, unscrew the nose from barrel and change the refill. I find the nose made from plastic. it’s not a good point and make the pen feel a bit cheaper.

6.Cost & Value (8/10)

It’s £15 on UK market and if you compare with £2 plastic version it’s looked a bit expensive. Well is not! The plastic one is disposable and Limited version you can use it again and again, just refill it!

7.Conclusion (8.5/10)

It is a great Metallic roller ball, not expensive compare with different brands. There are 2 big pluses in my opinion. First is the click action to operate easily with one hand. Second is the variety of refill sizes and colours made by Pilot; also is look like you can hack different branded roller ball refill to suit your still, just like famous already Pilot G2 MontBlank.

I have tried this refills and seems to fit : Pentel LR7, Zebra JF, Schmidt 888 and Schneider topball 850. The difference between them is the size of the tip (some narrow than others) and length (not big difference). You can fit for example a Zebra JF refill into Pilot G2 pen, but you can’t fit Pilot BLSG27 refill into Zebra Sarasa pen, because of the tip size (Pilot refill is thicker).

Here is a list of other refill that may fit in this nice Pilot G2 limited pen.

Fell free to interchange the refill you want (on your cost) and leave a feedback if you like.

I understand this is a Fountain pen forum, and there are some members offended by people who use a different writing instrument then FP. Well, they shouldn’t! Everybody have the right to choose whatever is appropriate for their needs and style. Not everybody work in an office to carry a FP, some of us working on construction sites, restaurants, receptions or in an place where you need to take quick notes with only one hand, the other hand been occupied with telephone, or writhing pad., or both…

I think this review is an alternative writing mode for a fountain pen user.

I have been using one of these since they came out as the pen attached to a notebook that I take everywhere. It gets rough treatment which is why I don't use a fountain pen. I have thought about replacing it with a Kaweco AL Sport, but as the OP notes the one-click speed of access is a plus that the Kaweco would not have.

I considered a Pilot VP too. But the Pilot VP will not take rough handling. The section (shiny bit with the clip on the VP) is fragile and will scratch, dent or crack with even modest rough handling, e.g. throwing in a bag with other stuff. This is a major disappointment, because the shiny bit looks metal but is not.

There is a similar problem with the pen under review. The metal barrel is very robust and the finish is quite resilient. So too the rubber grip and the shiny front end. However, the barrel above the upper ring, which has the clip on it, is *not* metal. It is plastic with paint on it so that it looks like the metal barrel. That paint chips relatively easily. So mine looks fairly bashed up, but solely in that piece.

One difference is that this pen is cheap compared to a VP.

The lesson, I suppose, is that if you want to keep it looking good, you have to treat it somewhat gently. In which case, one might consider an inexpensive FP, if you could get one-click or similar fast access.

Good review.

David.

The G2 refill can be used quite nicely in a number of different refillable rollerball bodies, including the Lamy white pen and Lamy CP-1 rollerball. I use them a lot as the Lamy refills are so expensive, and I really like the feel of the G2. They also work in some Waterman pens...

I have the Dr Grip G2 pen, that I carry around and use. This new metal version sound like one I should get. The OP is right. Fountain pens are good, but, if a person works in certain circumstances, the G2 pen is the best possible alternative.

IMHO, nothing beats the G2 (0.7mm and above) in terms of pull-out, click, and write. I always have a couple G2s on me for those OMG-need-to-jot-down-something-quickly moments.

Here's the beat-up G2 Pro that I have used for years...

I really don't like the section feel or the width on this pen. I much prefer the disposable ones. And, while it is true that you can just refill this one, the refills actually cost more than the disposable pens do. For these reasons I just just the disposable ones when I can't have a FP.

@ everybody thank you for support!

Funny thing regarding 2 sellers from a Collin's Office Shop in Jersey. Before I start writing this review I went in 3 different stories to buy refills for my research, and nobody was able to respond my questions...sad but true. In the shop mention above, there was 2 gentlemen’s in their 50's very helpful but unfortunately they didn't have a clue what I’m talking about. I was asking for some refills (from Zebra, Pentel and Unibal) to match Pilot G2 pen, even told them it is for a research and they kept saying there’s not going to match G2…and I was carry on saying that it may be possible…and they keep saying no…On the end I drop it, and I just buy a new Pilot refill and a Pentel refill. It makes me sad when I seen this happening, when sellers don’t have a clue what do you want, you the customer…

Hi,

I did review the standard G-2 some time ago, and it is refillable, not disposable. While I use only fountain pens or pencils most days, I find that I review pencils, rollerballs, and ballpoints on FPN a lot more. The G-2 is a capless gel pen, and most of the other refills are for pens with caps. refills designed for capless pens are usually self-capping. The ball on the tip is spring-loaded so that it does not dry out. While the other refills may fit, they may suffer a shortened life-span as they are not protected from dry out.

Stolen: Aurora Optima Demonstrator Red ends Medium nib. Serial number 1216 and Aurora 98 Cartridge/Converter Black bark finish (Archivi Storici) with gold cap. Reward if found. Please contact me if you have seen these pens.

Please send vial orders and other messages to fpninkvials funny-round-mark-thing gmail strange-mark-thing com. My shop is open once again if you need help with your pen.

Will someone with the name of "Jay" who emailed me through the email system provide me an email address? There was no email address provided, so I can't write back.

My bad! Yes you’re right, but the plastic ones is so close to refill itself as price range so it's not worth to change only the refill...

Again, you’re right, I haven’t taught about that before I’ve done my review. But even so there are still some refill you might fit as capless RB:

Bic Velocity Gel

Zebra JF Gel Ink

Schneider Topball 850

Pentel LR series

Schmidt Safety ceramic roller 888

Monteverde Rollerball Refill

Thanks for adding the other refills that will fit. The G2 refill is good, but there are better.

Yes, no problem.

Like I said, there are so many different personal tastes in this matter.

My personal option is Schneider Topball 850 black ink, because is fine 0.5 and smooth.

Okay. First off the forum name is "Fountain Pen Reviews." Second, I have been a pen fanatic before I got into fountain pens.

While the G2 is definitely a very nice writing gel pen, the problem that arises is that any small piece of ... well, anything that gets in between the ball and the shell makes the pen not write smoothly.

When it writes smoothly, it's almost as good as any fountain pen you can imagine, but in my experience it only writes smoothly for a short period of time, therefor you have to constantly replace the gel ink cartridges.

Good, review. But the pen you review is called "Dr. Grip" in the US. They have all types of colors and materials they use.

I like the G2 bold point. Fits nicely inRetro 51s, Waterman Phileas, Rotring 600' and my Waterford Lismore best of all. I wonder if couldharm a pen if slightly to long, etc.I wish g2s fit in the Cross RBs.

Cheers,

The G2 Limited and the Dr. Grip are two different pens, even here in the US. I have both.

Nice review. I am not a big fan of the G-2 refill (concerning Pilot I strongly prefer the hybrid Acroball refill /which can probably also be hacked into this pen/), but the pen itself is one of their best-designed ballpoints/rollerballs. Recently a violet version of this caught my eye.

  • 2 months later...

Based on this thread I just got back from OfficeMax and picked up a 2 pack of the G2 refills for my Waterman Hemisphere which I could never get to work right with factory refills. So it sat in my bag. Thanks for the idea!! :) :D :headsmack: I should have thought of that years ago!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
