Zebra Color Flight Pencil

Hi,

I saw this Zebra pencil the other day, so I got one to try out.

First, pictures:

The pencil in all its glory. Not so bad, right?

Next, for the review, sadly, written with my nice Cross Class Century pencil 0.9 mm with Pilot Eno lead (my last four sticks of it). You will see why.

That is a very extensive review. Thanks!

For an inexpensive pencil you might try the Papermate Comfortmate. I really like these.

Fool me once, shame on you.

Fool me twice; damn

There goes that fox again.

Hi,

The Zebra 701 is not such a great pencil from a fit and finish standpoint. It's of Indonesian manufacture now and isn't as good as most other Zebra pencils. I've handled quite a few, and I think the Color Flight is a much better pencil. I think that in general, the Papermate pencils are made more carefully than the Zebra 701, but I recommend the Pilot S3 or the Super Grip. The Pilot Super Grip is in the same class as all of these pencils but is made a lot more carefully. I highly recommend it, having had one. I have written with Papermate pencils for sometime before. It was quite decent. While I wouldn't keep the Zebra 701, I would keep the Papermate. It was well balanced, light, comfortable, and the mechanism was quite good. The only gripe I would have is the way many of their pencils can't be taken apart for cleaning. The Japanese made Papermate pencils are my choice for budget pencils that you can buy in the US.

I always feel a bit silly for feeling this way, but when it comes to Zebra, I really look no further than the 301 series. They are cheap, readily available, and good (to me). I regularly carry a G-301, I have quite a few M-301s lying around (although I may put my Parker 51 pencil into play soon), and yeah, I even carry a V-301 pretty regularly and have a spare stashed at work.

I really disliked the Color Flight. I had a brown one and couldn't give it away fast enough (the problem with bad 0.3mm pencils is that you also have to give away the lead).

To Murdock: Zebra makes lots of great stuff, especially compact ballpoints and multi-pens. This was the first time I was disappointed with one of their products (although I've read they also struck out with the cheap metal fountain pen they released recently).

Hi,

Yes, the V-301 was pretty nasty. Most of their line up is quite good. I live their gel pens, and a lot of their pencils, but this pencil wasn't so nice. The disposable Varsity, Sailor Ink pen, Sailor ink bar, and some cheap disposables that Platinum makes (Not the Preppy) were a lot better quality than the V-301. I think they need to work on it a little more.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
