Mont Blanc Midnight Blue Written Review

Here's a scan of my written review of Mont Blanc's bottle Midnight Blue ink. This is a very nice blue-black ink. Writes really well, great flow and lubrication. Has really nice shading and colour to it as well as good water resistance due to it being an iron-gall ink. This is my third favorite ink after the old Lamy iron-gall Blue-Black and Rohrer & Klingner Salix. The ink bottle is great, all the Mont Blanc ones are, and make filling easy. It's not a cheap ink, but not the most expensive either.

Here's the water resistance test. For this I wrote on a small Rhodia pad and after letting it dry for a few minutes ran it under water for a few seconds. This ink the dye ran right away but the iron-gall was left leaving what was written easily read.

Great review: the highlighter test was a nice touch. I love this ink, it's my everyday work ink in a Lamy ALstar. No iron-gall issues, just a water rinse every third fill does the trick.

Thanks for the review.

I had read here that some MB inks are or used to be Iron Gall. Does the current bottle say that it is Iron Gall? If not, how did you know that it is? Any experience with pen or flow issues because it's IG?

MB's blue-black (now called Midnight Blue) in their bottles -- but not in their carts -- is an iron gall ink. The new issue now says blue-black on the box as well. Neither the bottle or the box says "iron-gall" but the instruction sheets (in the new and old boxes) both say that the blue-black is an iron-gall ink.

I use iron-galls all the time. They are all somewhat drier than non-gall inks but haven't yet ever led to any pen or flow issues.

Go ahead and use any of these inks. MB's Midnight Blue is my fave.

I think I remember the instructions on my bottle of Midnight Blue saying something about how it is iron-gall and that it should be cleaned regularly.

Here's an instruction sheet included in the bottle's box (old or new ones are similar):

Note that they say "clean your pen at least every 3 months", and that this applies particularly to the blue-black iron-gall ink. I try and adhere to this rule, but none of my pens filled with this ink and then rinsed out only after 6 months still envisaged any calamities.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
