Please Note:

  • The Written Samples above show some pen+paper combos that gave results which Ms Fussy considered unacceptable, which is nothing new, but some were quite unexpected / inexplicable.
  • To get a better grasp on SWSSBl, I chose to generate more samples with the same papers, and other pens chosen at random from those I used in previous Review/s. (In hindsight, it would have been more relevant to use some pens in common with my Reviews of Blue-Black inks.)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

 

Type:

  • Dye-based fountain pen ink.
  • Dyes are of the cellulose-reactive class, forming covalent bonds with the hydroxyl groups in cellulose.

Presentation:

  • Bottle.

Availability:

  • At time of posting we have three retail Vendors:

Daily writer?

  • Uncertain.

A go-to ink?

  • When one can accommodate a somewhat fussy rich Dark Blue ink.

USE

 

Business:

(From the office of Ms Blue-Black.)

  • Brings along a considerable amount of gravitas, so can be used for the vast majority of business writing, including upward correspondence.
  • For casual notes, a more convivial ink may be considered, such as Sailor Sky High.
  • Will do the necessary for personal work product, with good potential for a pleasant writing experience even on 'lowest bidder' papers.
  • Readability is very high, though one is not propelled across the page.
  • The dark tone and modest vibrancy do not give enough separation from Black for dedicated forms work, nor mark-up / editing of material printed in Black.
  • Not nearly enough zap for error correction or grading.

Illustrations / Graphics:

  • Not really.
  • I would be reluctant to have an ink narrow my selection of pens / papers to the extent indicated by the Written Samples.
  • For charts & graphs, it may not have quite enough separation from Black, but if Black is used only for outline/format, then SWSSBl should do well as a definitive Dark Blue.
  • For those working with applicators other than pens, the ink should do very well, though as usual one should determine if the ink gives acceptable S/DT.
  • Those using SWSSBl as a watercolour may be pleased that the ink remains of uniform colour, with no obvious separation of any component colour/s.
  • Water resistance is such that ink will come adrift if over-worked with wet media; and reworking the ink with wet media or damp sponges, etc. may greatly diminish any lines, but no thanks to those pesky covalent bonds, will leave a Blue stain.

Students:

  • Certainly possible for general notes; and use of 'lowest bidder' paper is very promising.
  • Should random papers encountered not yield acceptable results, a pen charged with a more accommodating default ink should be to hand.

Personal:

  • I am fortunate to have an array of pens and papers that should yield very good results from SWSSBl; and the inclination to do so.
  • Definitely the thing for pro forma personal business writing, with a bit of stealth to it.
  • As I prefer my Dark Blue inks to have an off-Blue aspect, inks of this colour and tone are right up my street.
  • I find SWSSBl has that bit of warmth without going to a Dark Sapphire, and is vibrant enough not to plunge into the depths of Blue-Black inks. (As ever, the Diluted Swab gives us a better indicator of the underlying colour of dark inks.)
  • As such, I find the straightforwardness of the colour+tone quite attractive.
  • The ink is not likely to distract from what is written, and promises a pleasant writing experience, it seems to suit my longer letters.
  • As is the case with dark inks with low shading potential, almost any nib width or shape should yield attractive results.

PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE & CHARACTERISTICS

 

Flow Rate:

  • Variable.

Nib Dry-out:

  • Yes.
  • Sometimes it was just the nib tip.

Start-up:

  • Inconsistent.
  • Compromised by variable flow and nib dry-out.
  • At times virga was significant.

Lubricity:

  • When running well, the lubricity was somewhat greater normal.
  • Feedback remained clear, not muffled.

Nib Creep:

  • Not seen.

Staining (pen):

  • Not seen after ten days. *

Clogging:

  • Hmmm. :hmm1:
  • Even though the flow was variable, I was able to complete all samples. As such, I consider that the pen was not clogged, (stoppage); rather that the ink was not flowing freely/evenly, (skipping).

Bleed- Show-Through:

  • Not seen. :thumbup:
  • Minor show-though on the Royal.

Feathering / Wooly Line:

  • Not seen on papers used.

Aroma:

  • Initially reminiscent of anise, with a hint of mint.
  • Very faint whilst writing.

Clean-Up (pen): **

  • Very prompt and thorough with plain water. :thumbup:
  • Another ink to consider if changing inks on-the-fly or in the field, or when using pens that are reluctant to shed the last vestiges of ink, such as Vacumatics & Snorkies.

Mixing:

  • May be safely intermingled with Scribal Work Shop Cryptid series inks.

Archival:

  • Not claimed.

pH:

  • 6 - 8.

Smudging:

  • I scrubbed what was written on papers used with a tissue-wrapped thumb at white-knuckle pressure, and found no smudging on any paper one minute after writing.

Smear / Dry Times:

  • It seems to me they are a bit long. Perhaps the unevenness in the flow, and the nib-tip dry-out gave aberrant results under my sampling method.

* Yes indeed, I dipped the thirty year-old white Pilot 'Lady' into a bottle of untried ink, which is certainly not Best Practice.

It is still early days for this ink, so those who are risk adverse to potential staining may well choose to wait until this ink has been more widely used over a longer time, particularly if using demonstrators or cellulose pens where ink is in direct contact with the pen barrel/window for an extended period.

 

** As this is a new ink, I followed-up the usual thorough water flush-soak-flush with a brief soak in a fresh ammonia+surfactant solution, which did not show the release of any additional residue. Subsequently, use of water only to clean other pens did not leave any visible residue on the paper towel upon which the sections and converters were dried.

THE LOOK

 

Presence:

  • Firm.
  • Inviting.

Saturation:

  • Somewhat high.
  • A fully inked line is well within range.
  • Feint lines on Rhodia were over-written.

Shading Potential:

  • Low.

Line quality:

  • Inconsistent.

Variability:

  • Pen+nib combos used:
    • Inconsistent.

    [*]Papers used:

    • Inconsistent.
    • SWSSBl was strongly challenged by the hard laid surface of the G Lalo, and somewhat less so by smooth coated surface of the Rhodia.
    • It seems that SWSSBl does best on slightly toothy papers of normal to high absorbency if matched with an appropriate pen. (Rather squishy of me, but that will do for now.)

    [*]Malleability:

    • Low.
    • Limited by pen+paper matching.
    • As with most inks with similar combinations of dark tone, high saturation and low shading potential, SWSSBl looks very much itself across the acceptable samples.

PAPERS

 

Lovely papers:

  • Slightly toothy & absorbent papers.

Trip-wire Papers: ☠

  • Coated smooth-surfaced papers, and others with low absorbency.

Copy/Printer Paper:

  • When matched with a suitable pen, the results were very good: relatively high line quality, and two-sided use seems very likely even on 20lb stock.
  • Should shrug-off OBAs.

Tinted Papers:

  • Quite possible.

Is high-end paper 'worth it'?

  • Not so much.
  • The smooth coated 'vellum' papers might be explored in pursuit of increased shading potential, but seem to require a bit of a pen chase.

ETC.

 

Majik:

  • Unlikely.

Billets Doux?

  • 'fraid not.

Personal Pen & Paper Pick:

  • Out of the blue comes the Pilot on Rhodia. *GASP!*
  • The very narrow hard nib puts just the slightest bit of ink on the page, which generates a whisper of shading. The ink colour is nicely conveyed without appearing bolted to the page.
  • The Rhodia delivers the goods: supporting shading and high line quality. The slightly warm base-tint moderates the amount of snap on the page, supporting an overall softer appearance.

Yickity Yackity:

  • Well then, I am pleased to have pens and papers that will match to this ink, and am willing to embark on an inky adventure that might see one or two more pens than usual in the wash.
  • I do wonder if my cautions need always be louder than my invitations.
  • Ah kushbaby, is this Dark Blue for you?

My experience with this ink is limited to one sample convertor full - agree with the review, with note that it seems a little more "chalky" to me.

Thanks for your confirmation!

 

As mentioned, with a new ink one doesn't have a great deal of experience upon which to base opinions, so I really think that Replies to the the Review add a lot of value to the thread.

 

I think your description of SWSSBl as having a "chalky" aspect is interesting. In the past, I've used 'chalky' to describe the appearance of some Noodler's 'bulletproof' inks, such as Lexington Grey, Legal Lapis & Polar Blue. It is a property that doesn't come across on any scan that I can produce.

 

Looking at the ink-on-paper originals, I would say that SWSBl does not have lustre or glow, yet the colour is rich.

 

My personal taste would be to either run this ink from a wet-ish pen to give a fully-inked line, or from a slightly dry pen to generate shading. Perhaps those choices could overcome the 'chalky' aspect. (?)

 

As SWSSBl is resistant to bleed- show-through and feathering, I reckon it can handle wet pens with ease. It is great that SWSSBl can generate shading from narrow nibs on on 24lb copy/print paper, and even the Sheaffer 330 on Staples 20lb generates some shading, which is no mean feat. I also found dilution could generate a bit of attractive shading, which was a pleasant surprise.

Ah 'majik' . . . it is one of the most intangible properties of an ink, so it is up to each person.

 

For me, I usually have some sort of physical reaction: blushing, wiggling of toes, wide eyes, etc., which may be accompanied by the faintest whisper of wings as the Ink Putti do barrel rolls.

Very unusual hand-writing. It sort of confuses my eyes. I have a hard time focusing on the ink and instead keep focusing upon the writing. I have never seen anything quite like it. Truly unique.

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off.
