Another great review, thank you. I just bought a cap and was wondering what to call its shade of blue... And sure enough it's this! Why did it become much darker at the end of the first paragraph??

Nice, thanks for sharing.

You're welcome, I am glad you liked it.

One of my favorite blues .... Soft and vintage,

Yes, it has a beautiful, atmospheric feeling to it.

Thank you for your kind words. The darkness was due to my fiddling with the convertor to let the ink flow as there was some sort of vacuum affecting the initial flow.

This is another of my favourites and I always think that it starts off the colour that some of the darker blue-blacks often age to, after a while. Another great review.

Another great review!

I've seriously kicked this ink out of at least five sample orders. I've always loved the actual prussian blue pigment, and even though I know there's none in this ink, and even though the color of the ink seems more subdued than the real life pigment, I've still always wanted to try it. So it's always made it into my cart, but always gets kicked out in favor of some other, brighter color because I think "It's just a faded, dark blue. I won't miss it.". But with that shading it's definitley not getting kicked out of my next order. :puddle:

Are you able to see any visible sheen?

Thank you! I am quite taken with this colour at the moment, and that it is in a matching Waterman Expert is very titillating! (Perhaps I need to get out more..!):roflmho:

Thanks - looks like a perfect match for all the 57th-tier and no-name 1930s pens I'm buying cheap and overhauling ...

Oh that sounds so exciting! I hope you will post pictures at some point (please!).

Thank you! I am so glad you will try it, I look forward to your views of it. I love the juxtaposition of coldness and softness.. it's very strange and attractive. As for sheen, none observed to date. I think you need to run a Sheen Seek 101 for us sheen-junkies please!

Thank you for the review, actually this ink is one of my favourites, thanks also to the fact that it is available in cartridges.

My experience is that it is slightly on the dry side, hence the best is to use it in a pen with a good flow, that allows the nice shading.

Used in a dry nib, it reduces itself to a pale, bluish grey.

I've been searching for a vintage-looking dark blue/blue black, but I want something that starts off a bit (or a lot) darker. I'm trying to match what came out of the Estie SJ I picked up last month. It was some sort of similar-looking in color (not overly teal), but much darker than this to start with. This is more of the color I got after it got diluted more and more as I kept adding distilled water when it stopped writing. Any suggestions? Or should I try picking up a sample of this and adding a drop or two of some sort of black ink to it to try and match what the first page in my journal looks like?

Have you considered J Herbin Bleu Nuit? I reckon that's a great vintage-looking darker blue-whatever. The sort of colour I'd like 4001 Blue-Black to stay, on some papers.

PR Sonic Blue is also vintage-like and shades beautifully.

Thank you for your kind comments. I agre about dry nibs, I think that is what happened above until I manipulated the convertor to push a little more ink through. I do really like this ink however.

Hi Ruth, in addition to the suggestions above, I wonder if it might be worth identifying the year of your pen and looking at what was around ink-wise at the time. My (completely novice) guess would be to look at the Parker, Sheaffer and Waterman stables of blue-black. If you know the previous owner/ link, perhaps they might enlighten you as to what was used? I have bought some 70's pens in recent months and they have come with their respective cartridges in various blues. Failing that, I would completely support your idea of PB with either Diamine Jet Black or Onyx Black, although I imagine if it is only a few drops, then any black might do; the only proviso being if some inks are more temperamentally averse to being mixed... Having said that, DO try Pb for the sake of enjoying this sexy ink in its own right! Good luck and do please share your findings!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
