Many thanks for the review. This ink is reputedly very similar (if not identical) to Diamine Majestic Blue in its good and bad points. Did you notice a purple sheen to it when dry?

I have not noticed any purple sheen to this ink when dry.

I love the kitten's contribution.

In my experience, Shocking Blue and Diamine Majestic Blue look virtually identical. They have the same behavior properties and both show the red sheen from a wet writing pen.

Nice review, and I agree with the others about a red sheen being seen, usually when using a wetter pen (I use mostly wet-writing stubs) on better quality paper.

Thanks for the review (and thank the Kitty for the help!)

I have this ink and really like the color and behavior. It may really "come into its own" with bigger wetter nibs, but it is nice from F nibs too!

I've been pleased with all the Akkerman inks. I have samples available in the classifieds. The Akkerman inks in my limited experience are lower maintenance than the Diamine inks of similar colors. Let's not forget that the bottles are just dang cool!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

  • 1 month later...

+1 one of the epicness of Akkerman Bottles. Second in line are the vintage Sheaffer Skrip top-ink well bottles. I am a bit curious on what blues of Akkerman on like compared to Diamine and PR, for the purple/red sheen on DC blue is pretty cool.

But Amberlea, my friend, inasmuch as I find their bottles all completely crass in regard to their pen-fillability and and volume-wise lucrativeness, they are IMO just too large. I still prefer the usual 40, 50, 80-ml things. Also the availabilty/payment/shipping. Most of the other companies are "better" in these respects.

Mike, you probably have me on the "too" large. As a Nevadan, *generally*, think bigger is better. bunny01.gif

With the current exchange rate you can get them for about $27 a bottle shipped to your door in the states... IF you buy 3 bottles at a time.

I just ordered and the total for 3 bottles was just over $79 shipped.

Its an investment in ink for sure but 150ml bottles are certainly big!

Yeah, I've had to "divy" them into samples and paint with them because I am never going to use that much Akkerman ink in my life, and I write a lot.

The Simplisties Violet took forever for me to clean out of the pen I used it in. I don't know of any purple Diamine inks that are difficult to clean. I might have to look into that.

Awww! The results are never that cute when my cats, um, help me with reviews. :roflmho:

Great review! I've got a sample of this ink in the review queue and I'm getting antsy to try it! :)

Colrehogan - I have similar issues with Diamine Grape - that stuff hates me and my little pens too.....

Good evening, gentlefolk.

This is my first posting and I hope I'm not too far off-topic with this question, which does pertain to Akkerman of The Netherlands.

I have been looking into perhaps buying Akkermen ink when I travel to Amsterdam just before Christmas but, not being able to decipher Dutch, am having problems in understanding the dissimilar portfolios of P.W. Akkerman of The Hague and P.W. Akkerman of Amsterdam. I find no ink listed in the latter's stock, only the former. Do any forum members know if the Amsterdam store does not stock proprietary ink, and perhaps enlighten regarding the relationship of these presumed affiliates?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
