Noodler's La Couleur Royale

Recommended Posts

This is a fantastic, deep, saturated purple ink from Noodler's. I love it!

And please note that I dropped the "e" off of "Royale" because I always copy directly what's on the Goulet sample vial and whoever was on sample sticker detail that day dropped it, too. So I blame the Goulets. :roflmho: :P ;)

Wow, that is a retina searing color. Like it! Thanks for posting this review.

A detailed review and good to see this colour getting some more attention.

My bottle has a more distinct bluish tone like a deep royal blue than your writing samples (our Purple Martins look about the same).

I really like this ink it is a nice colour and has as noted above a retina searing intensity. Seems to be a rather wet ink too.

Wow, that's a nice purple.

How does it behave compared to PR Tanzanite?

All I want is 1 more pen, and 1 more bottle of ink, and maybe 1 more pad of paper. Well, at least until tomorrow. Oh yeah, and throw in that bottle of single malt. Is that asking for too much?

thanks Chris.

Just re-wrap the ink vial with the original blue wrappings and send it back to the Goulets with a note. "You guys forgot the letter "e" in Noodler's La Couleur Royale." lol All in all, a good review. I like the saturated look of this ink.

My bottle is far more blue than this review; its ink matches the coloring of the label. Isn't the ink supposed to be a royal blue not a royal purple?

I thought the same thing. Maybe the bottle needs a shake or two.

It is interesting to go to Goulet Pens & compare swabs

La Couleur Royale, North African Violet and BayStateBlue. You might need sunglasses if you look too long.

My LCR is also more blue than purple. Maybe its the scan or my monitor? It's closer to Tanzanite but duller and dryer. LCR does not satisfy my purple craving, though Tanzanite does, and Tanzanite is still sober enough for work. My purple wampum is also much darker and duskier than the OP's scan.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone!

I'll have to dig out the sample page tomorrow and compare it to the scan. I recently changed the way I scan these reviews (after I calibrated my monitor correctly), and I had to tweak this one to get it to match up. I have some other reviews for which I'll be taking sunlight shots of because their colors don't scan well, so I'll stick this one on that list. :)

I received my bottle this week and I have got a navy blue :crybaby: Whilst it is a gorgeous navy, I wanted the purple at the beginning of this review. Any thoughts anyone?

  • 4 weeks later...

The photos in the original post appear too bright and vibrant on my screen. My bottle of Couleur Royale is a much darker bluish-purple. I think it may be my favorite ink to date. I also seem to remember Kung te Cheng being much bluer as well...

I have always liked your ink review pictures mhphoto. Whenever someone mentions the word "sheen" your review of Diamine Eclipse pops up in my mind.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
