The 19th century and the early 20th were a golden age for handwriting, calligraphy, penmanship and lettering.

 

This set of 33 sheets was originally published in 1899, this is an 1929 edition. I don't know anything about the author of them, although it's obvious he was a skilled calligrapher.

 

There is no instruction here on how to hold the pen here, so I'd suggest looking at the new spencerian compendium on Iampeth.com for that, or another suitable book.

 

For reference, You'll see the names of pens mentioned, such as the Perry 111: none of these are available any more. You'll need the Gillott 303, the Principle EF and Mitchell or Leonardt roundhand pens.

Thanks for posting this book in its entirety.

 

The first script he displays "Scrittura Inglese posata" (English Roundhand?) is particularly beautiful - and the rest are pretty good too!

Thanks very much for taking the time to post this. I especially appreciate the scale - large enough to print out on A4 without the pixels breaking up the forms! Will be studying the Roundhand for some time to come.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy.       I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
