Here's my review of the wonderful Sargasso Sea from Diamine, a heavy sheening ink that has pretty much guaranteed a place on my ink shelf. :puddle:

Wow, that *is* a lot of sheen. Do you get it with finer or less flexing pens? And do you still get it even when diluted (and how much did you dilute it, anyway)?

I liked it enough as a sample, even without getting much in the way of sheen, to get a full bottle, but haven't actually opened it yet....

Gorgeous ink, I want *now*! Excellent review and photos, once again.

Thanks guys!

You still get plenty of sheen with fine nibs, though it would be bubbling golden mountains of it like in the glass pen sample. ;)

And I'm afraid I can't give you a definite answer on dilution. What I do is fill the pen (Noodler's Flex demonstrator) with enough ink to do the review (time and many reviews have taught me how much), and when I'm done with the review I'll keep writing in my notebook until it runs out. Then I twist the plunger until it's all the way down and suck some clean water up until it pops just past the feed and into the barrel. A line of writing in the notebook and the extra water is cleared, from then on it's nicely, perfectly diluted ink. Sooooo, that much. :roflmho: ;)

I just wrote a review on this ink.

The summary of my review: it's a wonderful ink in search of a pen. My initial impression was disappointment. I just couldn't get the ink to work well in a couple of pens. I have, however, found a Pelikan MK30 in which this ink works very well in.

I have NEVER found any degree of sheen with this ink. In fact, I went back to my original writing samples, and see no evidence of sheen. It may be the paper or contaminant.

I'm guessing paper. Even the scribble samples I did on copy paper shows the tiniest bit of sheen, but it was so absorbent that the ink just couldn't stack up enough to get any.

I really like this ink but purely by chance, I've not used it a whole lot recently. I did find the sheen but it's not as obvious on this snippet; but then it was done to show ink's behaviour on Bank Paper anyway.

It will be going into a pen again shortly.

Ahh, c'mon you guys! I'd sure like to find out how you get that sheen. Sure, you need the right pen, paper, scanner, camera, lighting, eyes, angle of inspection etc etc.

I never see anything like that. Well maybe, but only with a giant hunch of imagination. F'rig'zample this is what my attempt looks like:

Actually, there's a similar sort of effect with Sailor Jentle Blue as well.

I got my last invoice from the Goulets with a note written in Sargasso Sea and I was like "CURSES!" because I didn't have this ink on my list and now I do. May have to do a small order of 30ml bottles from England for this and a couple others I want.

Okay, okay. I did it, thanks to your commandments. Using my Lamy Joy, 1,5-mm again...

First the "well, maybe...":

Now, two shots definitely approaching the "Wow stage"....

Thanks again but I'm not sure I'll spend so much time waiting for a good lighting, whipping out my camera, and tilting my head and neck.

very nice dark blue plum color  thanks for sharing

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

I love this ink. The sheen on this stuff is amazing. With a wet nib the sheen is so heavy it makes the letters glow.. My favorite ink. Thank you mhphoto, your review is what sparked me to try this ink

Love the color and bought two bottles of the stuff. Still looking for a pen that it doesn't clog. The other inks that do this are Diamine Grape and Diamine Majestic Blue. All are colors I love. I've diluted the inks, but I guess not enough yet. :crybaby:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
