Nakaya Piccolo Cigar Housoge Kikyo Platinum

Hello!

Here is a quick little review before I head off to bed. The pen I'll be reviewing today is a special edition Nakaya.

Appearance & Design (10) This pen is very ornate, possibly even too ornate some would argue. It isn't that long but the overall girth makes it very suitable for writing over prolonged periods. The floral pattern is very pretty and seductive.

Construction & Quality (10) The pen has a very unique feel. The ebonite is always warm and the engravings give a real hand made feel. The cap and barrel alignment is perfect. No complaints in this department :).

Weight & Dimensions (9) I generally prefer pens with some heft. This pen is very light and wouldn't be my first choice for quick notes. I'm sure if I had to write several pages I'd reach for this pen though. The pen is fairly short which may bother some people.

Nib & Performance (9) The pen is equipped with a firm medium 14k gold rhodium plated nib. Being an Asian nib it writes closer to a fine than a medium. The nib is smooth but not Dupont smooth. I like that the nibs are interchangeable and can be easily swapped for another size.

Filling System & Maintenance (9) The pen uses a platinum cartridge/ converter filler. This is a proprietary system, however adapters can be purchased to use international style C/C. Nakaya also sells interesting makie converters in their online shop. I personally like C/C fillers because they're very easy to maintain and clean.

Cost & Value (10) This pen certainly isn't cheap but does represent great value. When you consider the time and energy put into this instrument the price is easily justified.

Conclusion (9.5/10) Hopefully you enjoyed this review. I apologies for any grammar and spelling mistakes :headsmack:

regards,

Kyle

That's far too pretty to consider smearing black ink all over it.

A good review as well.

Is the white platinum or silver or ??????

Such a beautiful pen, Kyle -- and thanks for posing the Nakaya next to the Dupont! What a lovely pair.

I will say this about the Piccolo's size... I have a vague memory of having to adjust to the shorter size of the Piccolo. The adjustment period didn't take long, and of course now I don't notice it at all and can go from the Piccolo to the Desk Pen (about 8" or 20cm in length) or any of my pens seamlessly.

Thanks for the review and photos!

The shots from yesterday (excluding the first picture) used artificial lighting. I just took a few pictures outside with the XF as a backdrop .

A beautiful review of a beautiful pen, thank you. The engraving is incredible.

very lovely blue pen  thanks for sharing

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

If only it was a long piccolo or standard cigar size. :)

You could order the same technique on a different model as a custom order. It'll take several months, though.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
