Writing Slope Dilema

So the next stage after removing the clamps and putting the next tray into the clamps.

I have looked at everything else available in order to save weight but I have not found anything yet that gives the flexibility of plywood and dowels.

The picture above shows all of the components for the rest of the tray, One piece of plywood and dowels ready to be stuck together.

Esterbex largest pen is 17 mm at its largest point so I plan to leave at least 22mm to 25mm between dowels to allow for material and of course the possibility of larger pens in the future.

Thanks for watching

The next stage takes a bit of time I started with a 25mm spacer which I new was near to where I wanted to be.

I laid out all of the pieces and clamped them down one at a time until all 12 were equally spaced I shaved 1mm off each time until it was right I will take pictures next time as I now have the correct spacer.

This is a fantastic thread! It reminds me of my need for a writing stand, a big slope on legs in other words. Now I'm inspired. :clap1:

What, three days and no update, Michael?? :P As always, your work amazes me and it is a joy to watch the progress - ugly duckling turns into beautiful swan mythology proven true right here on FPN.

The writing slope you restored, ihimlen, is gorgeous, too. How I wish I had even a part of the woodworking and crafts skills that you and Michael seem to have an abundance of - it's not fair! lol

I was just starting the upload of todays pictures.

Todays problem was that when all three trays were placed inside the box they filled almost all of the space available.

The outer edge of the top tray catches on the inside of the lid as it closes the solution was to remove the outer edge of the top tray.

If you look closley you can see where the front edge of the box has been removed.

If you have been following the Art Decco box for esterbex you will remember the challenge of the hinge well it reared its head again today. The hinge is made from velvet I had to add card behind the velvet as it folded in on itself and stopped the box closing properly. The card forced the material forwards out of the joint.

When the trays are added that card and material are forced upwards into the lid.

This is not a problem until you come to line the inside of the lid.

Anyway I have made the parts so I will show you how they are made.

I measured the inside of the lid and cut the card to that size wrapped a piece of velvet around it measured it again took one away from the other then trimmed that amount off the card.

Glued the card and stuck it to the velvet and trimmed as below

Add more glue

fold the edges over and roll with the roller until stuck.

Unfortunatley I will not be able to use these pieces as I explained above.

In the last update I glued the dowels to the plywood to make the tray insert today I stuck the velvet to the insert it now looks like this.

It is very hard to appreciate how lovely this velvet is it is so tactile.

Bumper update today I hope I have explained everything clearly.

Thanks for watching

How about using some of that lovely red ribbon as an internal hinge enhancer, though I don't know how you'd attach it. It should crumple or fold out of the way enough to not hinder either the trays or the lid....just a thought.

I think this lid is to large for that type of support and to be honest it is almost finished.

I have one insert left to wrap and then I can start to apply the finish,

Trays with divider fitted

Inserts marked and ready I know it seems simple but I have maked the inserts for side and direction of fit

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8097/8459830534_7ccb204878_z.jpg

IMG_9731 by my0771, on Flickr

I cut the plywood to size glued the dowels in place then marked the lines over to the second piece of plywood.

IMG_9733 by my0771, on Flickr

Thinking about it now I could have left the plywood in one piece glued the dowels to it and then cut the plywood to size, It would be difficult to cut but it was quite difficult to match the dowels across the divider.

Only one piece of velvet to fit now and then I can start applying the finish.

Oh I must remember to add the ribbons to lift the trays up with.

I would normally stop posting pictures at this point.

Esterbex as it is your box i will leave the decision up to you wether I continue posting pictures.

The two small tray inserts are now complete resplendent in their red velvet wraps.

I will now start the finishing process.

Ok Esterbex will do.

I have wrapped the tray inserts in plastic for protection so I will post pictures once the sticky stuff is dry.

I am planning on checking the base of the box as with every thing inside it is very heavy.

Thanks

The finishing process is now well under way.

I do have a small issue when you look at the box from the left hand there is a small light patch I stripped off the finish this afternoon and applied a little french polish to put the colour back and applied a coloured wax.

I stll have the same light patch

Picture 3 shows the same corner from the front and above the patch is not visible ??????

I am concerned that if I keep rubbing down and refinishing I will rub through the veneer which would make me cry.

I have also started finishing the trays They have also had a little french polish to give the golden colour but not enough to make the oak too glossy.

I fancied a change today a little while ago I made a pen wrap for a friend and she has asked if I could make another.

To be honest although I fancied one for myself I have not got round to it I had to look at the photos of the first one to refresh my memory.

Anyway i cut a piece of black lining suede large enough to make a front back and flap all in one.

I decided 8 1/2 inches would be large enough for the outer leaving 71/2 for the inside.

I then sewed up the sides using a stitch marker a little toothed wheel and an awl to make the hole

IMG_9785 by my0771, on Flickr

I then marked out the slots with masking tape which helps to keep the stitching straight and makes marks for the holes easy to see.

I cut the outer piece to size

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8376/8472011850_ffa5e746d8_z.jpg

IMG_9781 by my0771, on Flickr

The next stage was to sew up the pen slots 10 in all

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8097/8472012748_922879855f_z.jpg

IMG_9785 by my0771, on Flickr

I have filled the slots with pieces of dowel so when time comes to glue the liner onto the outer piece I will only apply the glue to the areas where the pens are this makes it easier to get larger pens in without any problems.

The pens will be covered completley the flap will stop the pens falling out.

When its finished it will look like this

Thanks

Nice pen wrap, Michael. You are truly multi-talented! :) Now, back to the woodworking... :P (Nice to be able to take a break from one craft by getting involved in another.)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
