Akkerman Voorhout Violet

In scans, this ink looked like a deep, rich purple, akin to De Atramentis' Aubergine (my running favourite). Imagine my surprise when I inked up a pen and what came out was more similar to Diamine Damson.

The ink itself is a nice colour, once I got over my colour shock. It tends to look a little more purple on CF (like this) ...

... than on Rhodia or more absorbent papers (like this!).

At least the shading is nice!

As usual, more photos in my Akkerman sub-folder album here.

Thanks for the review, especially as I've been too lazy to write one, even though I've been enjoying this ink for the past couple of months. Your observations are spot on, although I haven't noticed the long drying time in my typically haphazard note-taking, even with a broad nib. I'm looking forward to comparing it to Diamine Grape (which should arrive any day now).

I'm looking forward to trying this one. Somewhere on FPN I saw a side by side comparision of Voorhout Violet and Damson, and they were definetly different. Diamine Eclipse and Grape would also be interesting candidates for a side by side comparision. If the Akkerman inks really are made by Diamine, I think there's a good chance Voorhout Violet is a unique colour.

I wasn't aware of the comparison with Damson but it wouldn't surprise me if this was one of the special colours for Akkerman. I like this ink a lot but Grape promises to be darker, moodier - what I prefer in inks these days.

Follow up: a brief comparison to other purples is at https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/223908-brown-green-purple/page__p__2378817__fromsearch__1#entry2378817. Moreover, I discovered that a text I'd written on a sheet of paper and then left it for a few weeks on my desk had faded quite badly. Stupidly I threw it the paper away but I'll try to reproduce it soon. On the positive side, as Lovesink has observed in his review (https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/192309-akkerman-voorhout-violet/), it's pretty water-resistant, even under the tap.

Wonderful review as always! Yes, the colour is somewhat simliar, but DDamson doesn't shade like this ink does. I wish it did!

Just out of curiosity, I see that Voorhout is a town in South-Holland, but I don't understand the connection between the town and the deep purple color. Would any of the Dutch members be able to explain the link?

Voorhout is next to The Hague, Akkerman's home - you could call it part of The Greater Hague, even though it belongs to a different municipality. I guess that the name was chosen because it starts with a V like violet.

Doesn't really matter, surely; it's great ink whatever the reasons.

Just adding my amateur review for comparison's sake. I usually get samples before buying a whole bottle, but in the case of the Akkerman ink, I had the opportunity to buy at the Triangle pen show with no lead time to get samples first. I knew I wanted a purple so had to select from what was on the shelf. Parkpop Purpur was a very attractive purple, but not one that I could see myself actually writing with for extended notes or letters, so I went with Voorhout Violet.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
