De Atramentis Pigeon Blue

DISCLAIMER: This is one tricky ink to photograph OR scan! I did my best to try and white balance to where the ink color looked as accurate as possible. It also looks very different in different lighting scenarios. If I can, I'll add "daylight" pictures at a later time.

Ok, so here we go.

This is a great ink. I was given a sample by a kind FPN member while I was looking for the perfect "Tiffany Blue" color. This one was a bit muted to match that, but it is still a fabulous ink in its own right.

Main points:

Soft, muted blue-green. It's a subtle and sophisticated hue.

Fantastic shading.

On the drier side, and not very lubricating for the nib.

It's light, especially where the ink pulls away to pool elsewhere and give shading. I feel it's perfectly legible, but it may not be for those who prefer F or EF nibs, or those who need darker inks due to compromised eye sight.

No feathering or bleed-through noticed.

Dry time seemed really long when I tested it, but it has not been problematic during actual writing. Southpaws may have problems?

This ink held up to the Q-tip water swab (I did 3 passes) pretty well. HOWEVER, it all but totally disappeared in both splatter and faucet testing.

Verdict:

I really dig this color. Not sure when I'll buy a bottle, but this color is really growing on me.

Nice review. Love the low-saturation and shading. I've never tried this brand, but I am curious after this post. Thanks!

Thanks, this is an interesting ink. Did you try an italic or flex nib?

I'm loving this colour! I'm definitely adding this to my wish-list! The name is perfect, too - I'd totally use it to write the draft of my pigeon spatial navigation paper. :)

You're very welcome!

Haven't yet. I think it might be too dry for a Lamy italic. It would probably do well in a nice flex nib that's smooth. I'll have to try it in my Eversharp Symphony B sometime!

It's really quite pretty. I'm enjoying less saturated, muted inks lately, and this one is right on the money. It's got a sky blue-like quality to it, with a touch of green. Very tranquil.

Thanks for this review, Shaylen! I have been curious about Pigeon Blue, and appreciate your including this review as I believe there are not too many reviews on this one (if any). I appreciate your pointing out it's dry-ish qualities, which is something that I'm always keen about when it comes to inks. I have to say, the more I look at your "LBB mix" sample the more I like it leaps and bounds above the others. That's just me. I think your mix has the perfect balance of green to blue. I do appreciate Pigeon Blue's muted qualities though, as I tend to gravitate towards that type of thing more often than not. I might just add this one to my ever growing list of DeAtrementis inks that I want to sample.

No problem, glad to be of service. I didn't see a review for this one on the index, so I was hoping to help a bit. I wanted to check before I'd done mine, as my pics are admittedly sub-par, but at least now folks have something to go by.

I can float some LBB mix your way, if you're interested!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
