Two Ballpoint Refills, Different Sizes.

I took both refills out to compare them, both are medium blue, standard max, one was made in France and the other Germany. Next to each other they look identical except that the Germany one (from the Expert) is about 1mm taller than the France refill. Also, with the taller refill the little tank part that holds the ink seems to start about 1mm higher up than the shorter one and there doesn't seem to be a noticable difference in diameter. I can't tell what the cause for the grinding feel is when I rotate the larger Expert pen but I'm curious as to the slight size difference between the refills. Both were purchased at the same pen shop, both using refills from two different shops.

Note: the refill does not contact the spring but a plastic insert pressed into the spring.

Both have Standard Max written on them, one of them has it going up the pen while the other going down.
I tried pushing the refills all the way into the two different pen barrels and actually felt a slight resistance with both of them in the barrel of the expert. One of them seemed to go through with a very slight but noticeable resistance while the other would have a "grinding" feel when pushed into the barrel. Initially I thought they were touching something on the inside of the barrel but after a closer look, i noticed the hole on the tip where the refill comes out (forgive my lack of technical jargon in naming pen parts), was slightly dented. I tried putting the refill tips from the outside of the barrel and was able to confirm this was the cause of the grinding feel. I tried fixing it by putting one of the refills in the opening from the outside and rotated in in a circular motion to try and retain the shape, which seems to have worked because there is no more grinding feel with either refill being used in the pen.
The opening part still is a little deformed so I may decide to have it replaced if that's possible, I'm just glad to have figured it out. Thanks for your help.
BTW, could you explain what you mean about that last part? AFAIK, the spring goes into the barrel and the refill makes direct contact with it, there is no plastic part I can see in between the spring or the refill.
