De Atramentis Elderberries

Elderberries was part of the May Ink Drop from Goulet, and I thought I'd give it a try in my wife's Jin Hao pen.

I like this ink far more than I thought I would. It's a deep grape-purple that actually shows almost a maroon tinge.

I wasn't really looking forward to this ink, because I'm generally opposed to purples (our college rivals were the TCU Hornfrogs), but there were two purples in the ink drop set so I thought I'd try both of them first and get them out of the way.

This ink, though a purple, is the purple of ripe berries. It's a reddish purple instead of a blueish purple, and it's actually quite nice. It has good shading and it doesn't seem to feather or bleed very much. You'll see a little bit of feathering at the ends of the letters in the water swab close-up, but that's more of an artifact of the Jin Hao's nib than of the ink, I think.

I don't know why this one is sideways. Blogger does that to me sometimes, and I can't figure out out to rotate it.

This looks like I a mushed an elderberry. I didn't, though.

Heh, that should say "water swab." I didn't swab it with a wafer.

Thanks for the write-up; looks like a nice color! What was the scent like to work with? I'm a little concerned to try it because sometimes scented stuff doesn't like me very well....

I wouldn't worry about it being over-scented. The scent doesn't last at all on paper, and you have to put the nib to your nose to really notice it. It's just a whiff of berries.

I am journaling with the ink now...and it is certainly a very nice performing ink in a gorgeous color! Great flow and I'm loving it in the Apica 6A10!

Nice write-up for a nice ink! Thanks for posting it.

Have you compared this to Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses? I wrote a journal page with Elderberries, then compared it with an earlier page written with BSAR (same pen used on both pages)-- I cannot tell the difference between the two.

Thanks, Alice. I don't have a pen inked with BSAR right now, but I have some left over from that ink drop. I did a quick knife-smear next to the Elderberries smear, and they're darn close. I'd say the BSAR looks to have a more red/pink tone to it than Elderberries does. I bet you wouldn't be able to tell the difference in most pens, though.

Good catch!

Although I tried a number of purple inks and thought I settled on Diamine Syrah, R&K Scabiosa and DC Supershow Violet, this ink surely looks interesting. Fortunately I subscribed to the Ink Drop a few days ago and the samples are on their way. :-)

This is one of my favorite inks :) I think the scent is pleasing, but as others have said, it doesn't last long. So, if you don't want scent, no worries! It's a beautiful color and has a nice flow in all my pens.

I was just about to ask the same question.... I currently have my Konrad filled with BSiAR and while it behaved badly at first (alternating between dripping and stopping dead in its tracks), the color is now starting to really grow on me, and it's not being nearly as problematic.

I would not have tried this ink if it was not in the Ink Drop, since I already have some inks that look similar (I thought)

However, I really like this color! It is rich and dark, and shades well.

Anyone knows if there is an unscented version of this ink? Since those are a little bit cheaper from where I buy them.

I just got a bottle of this ink and, even though I usually stick to blue or Blue-black inks, I really like this color

This was the standout ink in the last ink drop IMO. They sold out when I went to order, though, so it's on my wishlist.

Too many pens; too little writing.

I also got this in the ink drop and love it. I need to order a full bottle.

Looks like it's not sold out anymore.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
