It’s a very deep red ink with a unique characteristic—it has these gold-like particles in it that allows the ink to have a green-gold shimmer on paper!
First things first… the bottle is absolutely beautiful. You can see that J Herbin went all out to make this a special ink (which, as an anniversary ink, it is). The difference between the 1670 and the normal bottles can be seen below. The bottle has a cap covered in red wax, there’s gold string around the neck of the bottle, and a fancy little wax seal in front.
The neck of the bottle is kind of narrow though… you may not be able to fit some of the fatter pens in there.
Also, you need to shake the bottle before using it if you want to get as much of the gold flakes as possible. In regards to the flakes, it hasn’t clogged my pens or anything yet, though I did have a bit of nib creep on my Lamy Al-star (which I cleaned on a consistent basis)
This ink stains pretty well. I stupidly spilled some onto my (fortunately tiled) floor and it took forever to wipe the stains off. I’ve heard reports that it can stain pens and that the newer bottles have some sort of staining warning on the box.
However, it doesn’t appear to be as high maintenance as Noodler’s Bay State Blue. Nor is it as water resistant (as you can tell from the picture):
This ink works best with broader, wet nibs as it allows the ink to collect on the paper and lay down the beautiful gold shimmer. The thinner nibs don’t do this as well. Getting the gold to show is a little tricky too. I’ve been getting good luck lately with my wet nibs and Rhodia paper. I hardly ever see it when using pens with dry and/or fine nibs. You may have to experiment for a while though before you find something good.
In terms of shading, it's a decent shader. It's not going to be as dramatic as say, Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses... but it's not a completely flat ink either (plus the gold shimmer adds to the dimension of the ink).
Overall, it’s a very nice, special ink. I hope J Herbin continues to make this ink. And if it ever gets discontinued, I’ll be in to stockpile a bunch of them!
