J. Herbin Rouge Hematite

Definitely one of my favorite inks. :notworthy1: :notworthy1: :notworthy1: I really hope they continue on with the production of it as a regular part of their lineup.

My favorite aspect of the ink, aside from the lusciously deep color, is the gold sheen it displays when dry. :cloud9: I've discussed it before here, and I've also discussed a cheaper, similarly colored (and golden) alternative, Diamine Wild Strawberry (See the review here and a discussion of the gold characteristics here).

It is a magnificent, truly regal red. However, it also tends to clog nibs and feeds. I used it in one pen several months ago, flushed it and cleaned it and put it away. When I took it out again and filled it with another ink, it didn't write smoothly...lots of skipping. I flushed the nib again, this time with vinegar and water, and out came these little pellets of what looked like iron dust.

I think it is an ink that has to be used with great care, but it is worth it. One of my favorite colors of all time.

I've heard reports of clogging, but I've never had any issues. Thinking back I think I've had three separate pens filled with 1670—a Noodler's Flex, Platinum Preppy, and Parker Sonnet—but none ever developed gunk in the feed. But it honestly doesn't surprise me that you had issues given the material that settles at the bottom of my sample vials.

I've had gunk left behind on my nibs that had to be physically wiped away as it wouldn't rinse. After that, I've reserved it for c/c fillers that are easier to clean.

Pretty color, but the behavior limits my use. It also feels dry and draggy compared to other inks.

lovely color, nice review  thanks for sharing

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
