Waterman Black

Here's a slightly boring review of a slightly boring ink for you. Please note that I was very sleepy when I wrote this, so if there are any typos or horrific grammar issues there's my excuse. ;)

One thing I don't point out in the review is that while this ink has a greenish tinge to it, it also must have quite a bit of orange(ish) dye in it. Bleedthrough isn't a big problem, but it can happen on cheap paper. But when you really lay it on—an example being writing with the Brause dip pen—the reverse side of the paper develops a sort of orangey halo around the letters that doesn't show up on the obverse side. Not that interesting, but worth noting.

I don't know about your bottle but mine looks like a vintage BlueBlack. In fact, when thoroughly flushed with water, only the blue component remains intact.

Hi MH, is this the 'new' release of Watermans inks, or previous stock? It looks lovely in youre Brauer! Thank you for the review.

Thanks! I got this ink for Christmas about… three years ago? Give or take, my memory is drawing a blank. I'm on a different computer today and the ink looks slightly brownish. especially the swabs. I've never noticed it before so I'll have to take a look when I get home and see if the picture needs adjusting and annotating.

Okay, I did a little work and replaced the images, so they should be more accurate now instead of having a bad brown tinge to them. I should note that there is a slight brownish-red iridescence on the letters that were very wet when fresh (like the Brause example), but they don't appear brown under normal lighting.

You're absolutely right. Normally the scans turn out very accurate, but this one not so much. There isn't much discernible brown, except in the Brause sample, which does show a little shift to brown, but nowhere near what the scan shows. And in person the lighter parts of the ink look decidedly green. I went back and altered the Observations and Brause example to make them less brown, so hopefully they look a little better.

  • 2 months later...

I'm looking for my first black ink and it's like to hear that Waterman Black is well behaved. This will probably be my first black ink I buy.

waterman black is highly recommended for vintage pens

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
